Detecting social differences in diet in medieval towns: isotopic evidence from Cambridge, England, c. AD 940β1538
This article is fascinating. Not surprising, but fun to see, that joining a friary was good not only for your spiritual but also your physical health. Would be very interesting to know whether a female convent had the same level of healthy, omnivores.

If ever there was a family to be disambiguated! Just spent several hours conflating what appeared as 4 families into the Amadori di Benozzo. Several individuals were in the #database twice with different surnames. Trip to Florence can't come soon enough!

We love how this patron made sure his gravesite would be remembered as long as the church stands. Not on the tomb slab (removed at some time in the 18th or 19th century, or maybe 1966), not even on the marker with his arms. Nope. Right there on the wall

Coat of arms of the Adimari family of Florence with shield split horizontally with gold above and blue below, or, party per fess Or and azure. This image comes from ASFi, Manoscritti 248 (Priorista Mariani), fol. 155v.
Goodness! The Adimari family has been giving us fits! A huge lineage with a number of archival family trees that conflict with each other. Happily a 1427 #catasto declaration sorted at least one line of the family out -- we hope

Woodcut depicting a teacher standing before his students. They are reading while he instructs them with a pointing right finger and is ready to beat them with a scourge in his left hand lest they misbehave.
Introducing Art History with Anne Leader (that's me). After teaching three linked introductory courses in 2025, I have decided to turn them into a #Substack in this #NewYear. /1

Round-arched doorway opening onto former chapel, now bookstore, at Benedictine monastery in Florence (Badia Fiorentina)
Tomb of Bernardo di Francesco Bonsi and his heirs in floor of former chapel, now bookstore, at Benedictine monastery in Florence (Badia Fiorentina)
We've been working for a while on the Bonsi Succhielli family and their various memorials, including a chapel in the atrium of the Badia Fiorentina with a tomb. sepoltuario.iath.virginia.edu/memorials/13...

Is it just us, or does Lorenzo Bartolini look a little like Ted Cruz? He was the last academy member to be buried in their chapel at Santissima Annunziata on January 20th, 1850. #history #Florence

The inscription on the banderoles woven through the bones is a paraphrase of Colossians 3:3: Mortui sumus et vita nostra abscondita est cum Christo in Deo. From "you" to "we" for the use of any member of the Accademia del disegno in #Florence who wished to use it. Chapel of St. Luke, SS. Annunziata

A rectangular marble tomb slab with an oval removable cover at its center. The oval frames a collection of artist's tools like pencils, paint brushes, straight edges, squares and an inscription that reads: FLOREAT SEMPER VEL INVITA MORTE.
We have been having fun with this tomb and its inscription today. May it [art and design] always flourish in spite of death!

Roundel from the pinnacle of an altarpiece by Lorenzo Monaco showing the Prophet Isaiah against a gold background. His halo is punched and incised into the gold leave. He wears a blue head and shoulder covering over a red robe. He points with his right index finger to a scroll that reads ECCE VIGO COCIP, the abbreviated Latin text of his statement in Is. 7:14 "Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son.β Isaiah is shown as an old man with grey hair and beard and he has a serious expression with pinched eyebrows, furrowed brow, and downturned month. Formidable!
Oof! 17 days since the last post. Still going down #research rabbit holes, but the last few days have been focusing on the altarpiece and altar that once contained this beautiful thing! Lorenzo Monaco, The Prophet Isaiah, sold at Christie's Old Masters 1 May 2019. #ArtHistory #humanities
