I host and edit N-Focus for @gamepodular.com. I also do the YouTube, Twitch, and some back-end stuff. I'm always down to talk about games (or music, or wrestling). I sound like an American but I promise I'm Dutch. He/him

I have some macadamia nuts with truffle flavoring and I really like them. They start out tasting like egg yolks (the best part of the egg) and finish with the nutty sweetness of the nuts

the strategy the british state are using with trans care is the exact same as with disability benefits; overwhelm undesirables in bureaucracy then definitively remove any positive outcomes, leading to excess death statistics visible from space
It is deeply unsurprising to discover that former Cracked writer Daniel O'Brien is now a writer for Last Week Tonight
It has been very nice seeing so many people finally realize that Assassin's Creed Syndicate is in fact a very good game.
And who can blame her?
If I've learned anything about Ella Langley from listening to her first album, it's that she has a thing for green eyes
I'm trying to get back into the groove of putting words on a page again and this is the result of that. It's a little less formal than my usual work but I did that deliberately because I felt very strongly about this topic.
I wanna send a big shoutout to carbs. Nothing gives me the energy to get some shit done in the evening like a nice bowl of pasta for dinner

I think the biggest hurdle that players, including ones that have played for years, struggle to jump is that roleplaying is a significantly more emotionally vulnerable type of play than anything else.
Quite a lot of "get the rules out of the way" sentiment comes from A. Learning the game rules incorrectly (the Monopoly Problem) B. the game itself not being well designed or C. Attempting to use the rules for something they were not designed for. Rules are very fun and it's a game for a reason
It is possible to play games poorly and there ought to be dialogue about that and there ought to be consideration given to that in critical discussion about tabletop games.
Nothing has done more damage to the uptake of smaller specialized games than the winger wagging and smug superiority that the Anti-DnD crowd has engaged in.
People should experience a variety of games, but moralizing and telling people that what they like is bad actually never actually works.
TTRPG systems, at their core, are frameworks of creative restraints, posing imaginary exercises you wouldn't undertake otherwise.
House-ruling games out the gate avoids the confrontation of expectations & robs you the opportunity of switching frameworks, making you default into a "standard game".
If a section of your gameplay requires mechanical information that was laid out elsewhere in the book, please reference where to look for it, or spell it out again, where it is relevant. If that's difficult, it means you probably need to format differently.
The best implementation of safety tools is to see them as a conversation and come up with an approach custom crafted to your specific group.
Formalised structures are only useful if the group finds that the most useful approach and yet many RPG designers treat them as a cut and paste job.
Most arguments about realism are actually arguments about abstraction.
Making an RPG book fun to read and easy to use as a reference guide shouldn't be diametrically opposed concepts but they are two very different skills, and a lot of books skew in one direction at the detriment of the other.
Similarly, low-to-no-prep games do sometimes benefit from doing prep for them. Not everyone has the improv skills to think of locations, scenarios, or characters on the fly and having lists written down ahead of time can make running them less stressful and more accessible.
