Dublin council offers “Second Spin” of freedom for teenagers who’ve had bicycles stolen A programme in Dublin is offering teenage residents of the Fingal County Council area a replacement refurbished bicycle if theirs is stolen. "Most teenagers have low or no income, so if their bike gets stolen, it has a disproportionate impact on their ability to stay cycling and use active travel. And what we generally see is that a lot of teenagers, when they get their bike stolen, will go back to unsustainable modes of transport, whether it's looking for a lift from their mum and dad or driving," said Stephen McGinn, a cycling and walking officer with Fingal County Council…

‘People are going to use them’: Waterford scheme promotes safe use of e-scooters, e-bikes Department of Justice-funded Treo Port Láirge works with teens and young adults

If you want an antidote to the ill informed announcements of the government this week, look no further than the wonderful people in Treo in Waterford - they have researched the e-scooter phenomenon, know the subject and now provide training to young people. Loads of confusion indeed. What's an ebike? What's the link between someone on a scrambler killing Grace and bicycle helmets? Is high viz a cloak of visibility on a sunny day?

Same here in Ireland. It took us traders a threat to make helmets mandatory to finally get together and start a thing. The conservative attacks are coming from all fronts, and we need a narrative to counterattack.

And honestly, no offence, but if you don't cycle in a city regularly, I don't care what you have to say about it because you don't have enough knowledge or experience to comment

You wouldn't care what I have to say about rugby and you'd be right

It’s 2028 and all pedestrians are mandated by law to wear hi vis clothes at all times. Black north face jackets are illegal. Black mascara has been outlawed and replaced with neon. Drivers are still watching tiktok and saying didn’t see you there pal.

I heard a good one the other day. If I give you one euro every second, you'll be a millionaire in 12 days, but becoming a billionaire would take 32 years at the same rate. We don't realize how dreadful and insane it is that billionaires exist.

Maybe instead of harassing cyclists the government could do something about this kind of thing?
But that'd be harder so no

Helmets and hi-vis clothing to be made mandatory for e-bikes and e-scooter users Cabinet will sign off on plans to explicitly ban the use of scramblers on roads this morning.

Reducing - and enforcing - speed limits for ALL vehicles to 30km/hr in urban areas & cameras to detect cars breaking traffic lights would save scores of lives annually, but it might annoy some motorists so instead we get this performative BS from gov’t.

And there we have it folks, having failed to do anything to halt the injury and death toll on our roads the government now plans to criminalise cycling.

This will kill bike share schemes around the country. @bleeperactive.bsky.social

THE IRISH TIMES

In a disaster. the skeleton of society is
laid bare. Politicians need scapegoats
when their inability to make hard
strategic decisions is exposed. Whether
it be Met Éireann. the Habitats

somewhere. But who rezoned the
floodplains, who allowed housing
closer to river banks than was wise.
who has drastically underfunded
climate-adaptation measures for the
past 20 vears?

Amazing moment on French TV. A French judge explains how Trump sent people from the US Embassy basically trying to intimidate her during Le Pen's trial for embezzlement - something they've done to other judges around the world.

Seeing Zohran instantly getting a bunch of shit done in like a week makes you realize that politicians could always do that on some level if they wanted it bad enough and very few of them actually do.

Telling the government my new home is going to be a data centre so they'll build it for me

13.01.2026 08:02 👍 604 🔁 142 💬 11 📌 2

This is complete madness.
Ireland already has 90.
Far more per capita than other nations. We are outliers in just how many data centres we have.
And many more already have planning
We do not have enough electricity
We do not have enough water
This will come at the cost of housing connections

This government is taking advantage of people struggling to make ends meet and of the international situation to try to make access to environmental justice impossible while everyone is looking away. Objections can be sent to aarhus@dcee.gov.ie

The Gist: The Abuse Factory X, the child abuse imagery app, revealed our state has no red lines. This is the Gist.

"The world's most prolific child sexual abuse material and sexual harassment factory is now on Fenian Street in Dublin. We don't need a dawn raid, or an Interpol investigation to reveal that address. We can just look it up in the Irish Companies Registration Office."

The relevant law allows for significant fines for companies, and for fines and up to 14 years in prison for directors or officers of companies that commit offences with their consent, connivance or neglect. There's no gap in the law here. X needs to be subject to criminal investigation.
