Great to give a guest lecture on industrial policy and workplace democracy under different models of capitalism at @iipp-ucl.bsky.social yesterday. As always, the students were the stars, with their penetrating questions and brilliant observations!

Great to be in Brighton for this year's Annual @tuc.org.uk Congress. Enjoying catching up with so many old friends and colleagues.
Lovely to exchange ideas with the brilliant @graceblakeley.substack.com, author of โVulture Capitalismโ, at the @ucl.ac.uk IIPP conference on Rethinking the Stateโ this morning.
Lovely catch-up with my friend and fellow trade unionist, Kate Dearden, Labour MP for Halifax, in Westminster yesterday.

Congratulations, Yuan!
I enjoyed listening to you!
Keeping my fingers crossed for the brilliant steelworkers I met when visiting British Steel in January, to research the โSteel Reforgedโ report, and hoping even at this late stage that government, employer and unions can work together to secure this strategically vital industry at Scunthorpe.
Can we turn around decades of slow decline in our manufacturing sector? My post following yesterday's launch of the UK Innovation Report 2025, produced by Cambridge Industrial Innovation Policy.

I enjoyed @sarahoconnorft.ft.comโs article. I used to like pre-digital printers that you just had to plug in. These days, if your internet crashes you cannot print. Itโs what they call progress!
US tariffs on UK steel are obviously very disappointing, but we must carry on arguing for a positive future for the sector. My blog and the new @communityunion.bsky.social report, 'Steel Reforged', put the strong case for UK steel.

In a guest blog, @timpageeconomist.bsky.social, author of our NEW 'Steel Reforged' report discusses the challenges faced by the UK steel industry, and how, with the right vision, we can create opportunity and grow the sector.

The good news is that there is a path to a strong UK steel sector that also supports the UKโs drive for net zero. You can read about it hear in โSteel Reforgedโ, the new report from @communityunion.bsky.social. 3/3

I suspect my motives are different to those of Donald Trumpโs Energy Secretary, quoted in this morningโs @financialtimes.com but that doesnโt mean that everything he says is wrong. 2/3
โI find it sad and a bit ironic that the once mighty steel and petrochemical industries of the UK have been displaced to Asia, where the same products will be produced with higher greenhouse gas emissions, then loaded onto a diesel powered ship back to the UK.โ US Energy Secretary Chris Wright. 1/3
โThe country now has a generational opportunity to give our steel sector the vote of confidence it needs and deserves.โ Powerful words in support of the new โSteel Reforgedโ report from @alasdairmcdiarmid.bsky.social, AGS of @communityunion.bsky.social.

"We believe the Dalzell plate mill in Motherwell has huge potential to support the UKโs supply chain for offshore and onshore wind."
Our AGS Alasdair McDiarmid speaking in response to UKSteel's report which outlines how this opportunity will boost jobs, skills & energy security.
Thanks to the @communityunion.bsky.social reps and members who made me so welcome when I visited British Steel, Scunthorpe, to research the report โSteel Reforgedโ, which was launched yesterday. I saw first hand their pride in the contribution they make to British economic success.
Steel is vital for our economy and national security.
It supports well-paid jobs across the country and is key to making our country greener.
@communityunion.bsky.social report today provides a vision for how we can deliver a just transition to greener steel making and grow our industry.
It was a pleasure to be asked by @communityunion.bsky.social to produce โSteel Reforgedโ, which has been launched this morning. Thanks to the MPs from steel towns, employer orgs and, especially, the fantastic Community reps and members for sharing your experiences and stories. This is YOUR report!

Interesting. Policy design would be fundamental. In particular, there would have to be a red-line with regard to respect for employment rights. But tax breaks for employers to invest in areas where they will need to spend more to overcome social problems makes sense.
