Ha, this is brilliant!
Sorry youβre going through it but thank you for the writing

Yes. The whole debate around getting people back to work seems to completely ignore the fact that we've been through a pandemic. Long Covid, and the effect on young people.
βI never thought I'd be someone who'd need to claim benefits. I was a doctor, I was going to be working, and I can't and that's devastatingβ.
Long Covid. Theyβve shut/are shutting all the treatment clinics. Given up?
Looking forward to @yorklitfest.bsky.social on 14th March where I'll be interviewed by the wonderful @colettesnowden.bsky.social
Do come!

I thought the film captured the complexities of Heathcliff & Catherine's relationship perfectly: open.substack.com/pub/theright...
That too β a double whammy. It feels self-indulgent. But also: I want to skip to the point!
Ha, this is true of me, too. I never realised I read in a magpie-like fashion until I tried and failed to enjoy audiobooks. Podcasts with slow intros drive me nuts!
Iβm a βyesβ for the new Wuthering Heights film.

So true. Shamelessness is now acceptable. Unless it's too shameless. It's complicated.
"Keep your side of the road clean." In a world of dolourous news, all you can do is find one small thing - then try to fix it. And so me and the British Society of Magazine Editors are launching this - to find the next generation of writers AND PAY THEM. Screw you, AI. We still believe in writing.
Incredible to see so many talented writers celebrated at last night's #BAFTAs - a huge night especially for Maggie O'Farrell & Dean Atta! Congratulations to them & all the excellent writers who won or were nominated π
We couldn't have the films we love without writers π
Faversham is waking up, the birds are singing - and it's the literary festival! Have we got some #books for you today π Come on down, make it a day? #Kent
Great question! Everyone is different - I think thatβs whatβs good, that students find out how interested they themselves are in editing, itβs not generic. I like the idea that a one-day course can save you months of hunting for the wrong job or spending money on a Masters for no reason.
Amazing cover. Stopped me in my tracks while scrolling!
An Introduction to Editorial A one-day course exploring the vital role of the editor in book publishing and introducing the basic skills required. Aimed at candidates from all backgrounds, this course is suitable for anyone looking to get their first job or wanting to move into editorial from another field. Weβll cover the following subjects, in a mix of theory and practical exercises: How to proof-read How to edit copy Commissioning and editing fiction and non-fiction The UK publishing houses β imprints and lists A day in the life of an editorial assistant Applying and interviewing for editorial positions
I really enjoy teaching this one-day online course because it's very interactive and we actually DO some copy-editing & proofreading. Reading up on careers is all very well, but there's nothing like having a go to see if you have a flair for something. getintobookpublishing.co.uk/courses/an-i...
π Thrilled to have two amazing judges this year, Sally Williamson from Transworld and Hayley Steed from Janklow & Nesbit π Send them your best work at firstnovel.co.uk
Itβs an excellent book.
Long Covid is brutal, as I know well, and tends to be met with a baffled shrug.

And a cup of tea from a brown teapot in a cosy, I hope.
Please strive to be better than me ππ«
Read the small print before entering. But also: big publishing companies, pass down some of the huge profits to the writers and editors so that they don't have to scrabble around for other ways to make a living...
I read Calvino for my Italian degree and still have no idea what was going onβ¦ π€·πΌββοΈ
One thing I'd forgotten about reading a long-ish book is the simple pleasure of looking forward to hopping into bed and spending an hour or two with it and the prospect of repeating that routine for however many nights to come.
Today is about βThe Birdsβ by Tarjei Vesaas, an absolutely beautiful 1950s Norwegian novel which I loved. My life is so much better for having read it. My care of patients has been dramatically improved by having read it. Thank you to Ruth Maxey for joining me today to talk about it
