When all the other time travelers are busy killing Hitler, I’m gonna take out Laura Ingalls Wilder.

I think this is perhaps a likely result but also one that will likely require either a continued military operation at enormous expense or a pretty humiliating public capitulation to letting the Iranian regime survive and either way the public will be *furious* with $90 a barrel oil.

I think Bentham remains a good guide to this:

The question is not, can they reason? nor can they talk? but can they suffer?

I remember as an OG Harry Potter hater and certified MFA Guy Shithead in the early 2000s hearing "as long as people are reading something it's a good thing" and thinking "hm not sure that's true." Anyway the phone made us all illiterate anyway. Didn't see that coming.

I can't speak to the software world, but from my POV (writer/journo/academic admin), any productivity gains from AI are completely swamped by lost productivity from Google's destroying their core product.

Same phenom is at work with extreme horseshoe tankies.

US = imperialist = bad

If you’re wondering why β€œpeptides yes but vaccines no,” it’s partly because a hallmark of conspiracy ideation is rejecting the mainstream and embracing whatever the alternative is.

Vaxx = mainstream = corrupt & bad
Peptides = fringe = secret & good.

U.S. sub sinks Iranian warship off Sri Lanka, killing 87 and expanding war zone A U.S. submarine sank an Iranian warship off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, killing dozens of sailors and dramatically widening Washington's pursuit of the Iranian navy.

A US submarine sinking a lonely, dinky Iranian surface ship an ocean away from the theater of the main conflictβ€”and 9000
miles from North Americaβ€”makes it pretty clear the US is fighting a general war, without the declaration required by the Constitution. www.reuters.com/world/asia-p...

This man was tortured through neglect, and everyone involved is an irredeemable monster

Typical Trumpian refusal to claim agency, or a telling slip that he's not really calling the big shots here? Pretty problematic that there's any lack of clarity in answers to that question!

Q. In the top of our story, we talk about the rally you attended in Managua and a wire report at the time said that there were anti-American chants from the crowd.
The United States at that time - I don't know how much you know about this β€” was actively supporting the Contras to overthrow the government. So that there's anti-American sentiment? I remember that, I remember that event very clearly.
You do recall hearing those chants? I think the wire report has them saying, "Here, there, everywhere, the Yankee will die." hey were fighting against American -- Huh huh--yes, what is your point?
I wanted to β€”β€”
Are you shocked to learn that there was anti-American sentiment?
My point was I wanted to know if you had heard that.
I don't remember, no. Of course there was anti-American sentiment there. This was a war being funded by the United States against the people of Nicaragua. People were being killed in that war.
Do you think if you had heard that directly, you would have stayed at the rally?
I think Sydney, with all due respect, you don't understand a word that I'm saying.

How have crime rates in the United States changed over the last 50 years? Both violent and property crime are far below their 1990s peak, but some crimes see periodic rises.

Looking at the 2024 crime figures, it's absolutely insane how Trump, tech billionaires, and centrist pundits fooled everyone into thinking Biden had turned the U.S. into some Hobbesian hellscape.

50-year lows for violent crime, armed robbery, property crime. Second-lowest homicide rate.

Re adding a million more satellites: it's a good time to read about Kessler Syndrome. Huge numbers of satellites could trigger a kind of cascade or collapse which creates v expensive problems in the long run.

This is a great point. Even on Instagram (and I hear from users, on tiktok as well), there are right wing accounts clearly sharing softened opinions on, say, Palestine and Israel, in attempt to shoehorn some horseshoe messaging into people's algos. It must be SO much worse on vichy twitter.

Fair point about the Platner thing.

Whether he knew who Peters was or not, just being on Twitter makes this kind of thing a lot more likely. You're constantly being exposed to white nationalists there and you might not even realize it. Get out now and avoid the collateral damage.

Using detailed address-level microdata, we trace movement chains originating with
the initial residents of The Central and document three main findings. First, we show
the building generated a substantial number of local vacancies. We identify 180 specific
addresses that became vacant because of moves into The Central. Scaling to account
for data coverage suggests the new tower induced more than 500 local vacancies in
the three years after construction, by setting off chains of moves. Second, while The
Central units were expensive on a per-square-foot basis, the homes vacated by movers
were significantly cheaper. Homes left behind by those moving into The Central were
about 40% less expensive. Unlike much of the prior literature, which track the changing
neighborhood characteristics of movers

Even more evidence that building new housing decreases rents: Researchers tracked the residents of a newly built luxury condo building and found that they freed up less expensive apartments nearby.
