Anna Aslanyan | On the Picket Line
On MondayΒ morning, more than a hundred people formed a picket line outside one of the entrances to the British Library...
British Library staff asked for a decent pay. Instead they got βa few money-saving present ideasβ, such as βconsider not giving presents this holiday seasonβ. They are on strike this week. I wrote about it for @lrb.co.uk. www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2025/de...

im not going to stop writing because that will make me equally, if not more, unhappy. the 5 people who read me have been with me since the start and im grateful for their presence. my question is about the current state of the media ecosystem as an individual writer existing among other indv writers

i approach every topic i write about with the same intent and seriousness and then i see half-baked takes and mediocre writing churning so much praise and money. what is the point of writing anymore? do i have to talk about every essay i write on tiktok/instagram to see any response whatsoever?

or simply accept my fate and die penniless? im tired of writing well thought out essays that get opened by 5 people while equally hearing "oh you're such a good writer" by people/peers who don't care about what i actually write let alone pay for it. i simply dont know what to do moving forward

5 years of independent newsletter writing and it's becoming more and more difficult to continue in a self-sustaining way unless i have some sort of following that will pay for any kind of shit i write. unfortunately i dont possess the personality of a cult leader. should i bemoan my lack of guile?
