This probably isn’t an issue on shorter trips where you can bring fresh foods, but on 20+ day trips the freeze dried meats are worth their weight in gold (and cost almost as much)
I deliberately increased the amount of protein I was eating a few years ago on my first Tha-Anne river attempt, and found it really did help with recovery from all that exertion.
On past expeditions I’ve usually brought about 4000-5000 calories of food per day. I realized I was falling short of my protein requirements, not coming near to even 1 gram per kilogram of bodyweight, a low estimate of what you need when you are paddling, portaging, and working for 12 hours a day
