It felt like a reunion — of courageous people who have been advancing justice for immigrant communities for 20 years and more, alongside a new generation of leaders carrying that work forward.

Thank you to the teachers and parents building community every day. Our kids are powerful and they remind us that representation isn’t symbolic… it’s necessary.

Our names are part of our identity, story, history, and home. And our young people deserve to feel proud of who they are, where they come from, and the languages they speak.

The moment that stayed with me?

A group of students getting so excited because they met someone who looked like them, who wrote a “whole book,” and who knew how to pronounce and spell their names. With the accents, the double Ls, the Zs, the rhythm and pride their families gave them.

I joined them to share Dreaming of Home and a powerful truth at the heart of the book: that young people matter, that they have a voice, and that they have agency to create change, especially in a moment like this.

A few weeks ago I spent the day with over 300 brilliant middle schoolers in Brooklyn. Students were children of immigrants, non-immigrants, Latine, and more — all carrying dreams that deserve to be seen.

Thank you for your love, support, and most importantly for continuing to work everyday for a country and a world where we all belong.

Our stories are intertwined, and our power is shared.

From LA to Phoenix, Houston, Miami, Utah, Virginia, Connecticut, NY, and more, it’s been a joy to reunite with friends, mentors, and compañerxs who continue to fight with courage and heart.

Traveling across the country sharing Dreaming of Home has brought me home to the people, the organizers and courageous leaders, who have been part of building this movement.

The administration says they will “flood the zone” in NYC with ICE to target working-class communities of color. But New Yorkers are coming together to say: hands off NYC! We will defend our neighbors and the New York we all love.

I'm proud that Dreaming of Home was named one of three finalists for the New American Voices Award. It was an honor to share the stage with powerful immigrant women writers Shubha Sunder and Olufunke Grace Bankole.
