What is Maths Like at a Lower-tariff University?
By Peter Rowlett and Angharad Ugonna
What happens in a maths degree? Will my A Level Maths students, especially those predicted B/C/D, be able to cope? These are questions we hear from A Level teachers, who sometimes recommend students who are interested in maths but predicted lower grades to avoid a maths degree out of a perception that it will be too hard for them.
We find this quite frustrating. We have a regular flow of students who arrived with lower grades and thrived, achieving well and leaving into fulfilling graduate careers. The impulse to protect students from a course that is too difficult for their ability comes from a kind place, but is unnecessary, and maths is a degree subject that leads to a wide range of future careers, providing a lot more options than other, more specialist options.
Our aim with this article is to provide a flavour of degree level maths through specific examples from our first-year curriculum. Maths at degree level isn't a big mystery or a different animal, but a continuation of what students have been prepared for in school.
A colleague and I have an article in the new Mathematics in School aiming to demystify maths degrees - the right course can be a great option for students with B/C grades!

I am unreasonably proud of combining several obsessions in one animation. An impossible tribar (aka a Penrose Triangle) level 4 fractal (Sierpinski Triangle), in 3D GeoGebra, with dynamic lighting (using the dot product).

I always start off with explaining how the standard normal distribution is a graph and we can transform it so it has different mus and sigmas. I donβt explicitly teach standardizing until later ( donβt know if this meets with Rob and Susanβs approval π

As a teacher, one thing I miss about London is the free transport for school trips.
Travelling around London for enrichment was completely free but back up north we have to rely on coach and minibus companies which cost a small fortune.
Hopefully this is something we can change π

Can you do two different things then - one is ensure that your curriculum covers good place value understanding, and the other is give students a tool that reduces the errors they make when carrying out longer calculations?
