Finding something today growing in the tree hollow behind Jenny’s house. 🌱
(This is what cutscenes in Vivarium look like!)
It's not in this build that I record footage from, but we're totally re-designing how time progresses. It's going to be more similar to something like Persona where it ticks forward when events occur, rather than on its own.
Here's a quick run through of the house!
We've been building out the entire world with inter-connectivity, short cuts, and loops. Almost like a miniature Souls world, or a Zelda dungeon.
I think it makes Vivarium very satisfying to navigate this way.
Wandering around the town in the evening, I think the lighting looks really special here.
This demo track that plays in the evening in town -- my collaborator @trentmakesgames.bsky.social was messing with something that sounded a bit like Animal Crossing on 64/GameCube.
Trying to break open the door into the shed behind the house!
We're putting tons of little bespoke animations like these around the game world. It's a lot of work hand-drawing everything -- but I think it's going to be part of what makes Vivarium special.

I tried to tie in some of the look of Papa Panda from Panda Go Panda and the space taxi driver from Urusei Yatsura.
Here's some of the design work we did behind the scenes for the character Chef! 🧑🍳🪝
A while back my artist collaborator was helping me come up with characters. Her catfish guy jumped out to me right away! Felt like I instantly knew him.
I then sketched him to be more 70s/80s.
Let me introduce you guys to Chef, you'll find him fishing around the various ponds and streams in Vivarium 🎣
Chef is like...a catfish kaiju fisherman thing who likes chilling out, having a smoke, and listening to dub and reggae.
Chef knows secrets about the terrarium others have long forgotten...
Hey everyone, Vivarium is making its Bluesky debut! Check out our trailer from #TheGameAwards last year.
#Vivarium is a role-playing adventure set in the mysterious miniature world of an abandoned terrarium. All of the visuals are hand-drawn and painted, taking inspiration from 70s and 80s anime!
