last point - this also has driven up dues to belong to a synagogue by a lot and is taking money away from other functions, so it is actually likely preventing a whole bunch of people from joining.
And there's usually a cop outside, armed security inside, a fingerprint reader to get in/out and another locked door on the inside before you get to the pre-school. Nor is it ever lost on me that the police and security are likely the most at risk (as was shown again today).
An actual thought i had dropping my child off at preschool at a synagogue was relief that the classroom was up staircase down a series of hallways not right near the entrance, because it meant that if an attack happened, maybe it wouldn't reach him. And then i felt awful about having that thought.
