I speak as a man with bad teeth exacerbated by radiation treatment, who grew up in the mountains: kind of a gap-toothed hillbilly. I’ve been insulted directly for the former, and that hurts. But references to the stereotype don’t.
In a case like the R-word, the clinical usage is much more recent and widespread, and there are still people who would call a developmentally disabled classmate that. At some future point though, that term too will cease to function as a slur and subside into mere insult.
It’s not quite like “hoist on your own petard” but it’s in that direction. There is a value in having a range of words to apply too. In terms of bad ideas frex, if I can’t call the Iran invasion stupid but only e.g. “poorly considered” or some such, my language loses force.
It’s a fair question. I think a lot of it is language drift, yeah, and also context. e.g. I’m aware that idiot and moron used to be clinical terms, though not the numbers, but nobody uses them that way any more. And lame is insulting applied to an idea, but not to a horse.
