Insurrectionist Brunch: Trumpists plotted to deploy military on U.S. soil Before the 2024 election, a cadre of MAGA loyalists met over brunch to plot ways for Trump to use the military domestically.

This is just astonishingly great reporting.

All of the crises the White House has claimed over the last 14 months were planned in advance. All of them.

And however much contempt you have for media outlets who reverently relayed Trump's claim to have no relation to Project 2025, it isn't enough.

I’ve made an effort the last few months to learn at least some of Excel’s newer features. I was pretty expert on Excel c. 2010 (plus I did learn xlookup) but there’s a ton of stuff they added this decade, esp. with array-handling

I mean, also a lot of people in other countries, and a lot more than seven.

"Gender is a fixed biological reality, like gravity" ok but you're not passing 50 laws making it a crime to defy gravity, why do you suppose that is

Like everything else in late-stage capitalism, we are turning war into something you order on the computer, done for you by machines, and involving as little effort, human interaction, and thought as possible.

We've been living like drunks on a credit card bender but the bill is gonna come due

10.03.2026 12:01 πŸ‘ 24 πŸ” 8 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Yes, hello, is that God? Yeah, hi. I have a complaint. You gave me this brain that’s designed for finding berries and avoiding lions and now people are β€˜just circling back’ to see if we can β€˜move the needle’ on β€˜key initiatives’? NONE of those things are berries.

10.03.2026 11:07 πŸ‘ 2710 πŸ” 697 πŸ’¬ 31 πŸ“Œ 33

These bills falsify themselves.

The core argument is β€œgender is an immutable aspect of biology”.

If it were so immutable there wouldn’t be enough trans-people in the world for anyone to notice.

I speak as a man with bad teeth exacerbated by radiation treatment, who grew up in the mountains: kind of a gap-toothed hillbilly. I’ve been insulted directly for the former, and that hurts. But references to the stereotype don’t.

In a case like the R-word, the clinical usage is much more recent and widespread, and there are still people who would call a developmentally disabled classmate that. At some future point though, that term too will cease to function as a slur and subside into mere insult.

10.03.2026 12:26 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

It’s not quite like β€œhoist on your own petard” but it’s in that direction. There is a value in having a range of words to apply too. In terms of bad ideas frex, if I can’t call the Iran invasion stupid but only e.g. β€œpoorly considered” or some such, my language loses force.

10.03.2026 12:26 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

It’s a fair question. I think a lot of it is language drift, yeah, and also context. e.g. I’m aware that idiot and moron used to be clinical terms, though not the numbers, but nobody uses them that way any more. And lame is insulting applied to an idea, but not to a horse.

I’m old enough to remember the Baha’i PSAs on tv. (I am old enough to remember PSAs on tv.)

I think it’s just that the steaks were prepared ahead of time, maybe not even on site, and mostly just reheated

10.03.2026 02:55 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Right. I’m thinking about this maybe being part of a chain reaction of migrations that leads to people further south becoming β€œSea Peoples.” Though is some of them really are Sardinians, Sicilians and the other consonant clues, it’s harder to situate them in such a chain.

10.03.2026 02:54 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

A principle of dining out I don’t honor as much as I should is, β€œnever order steak in a restaurant because you can do as good a steak at home for less money. Order something that’s hard for you to cook.”

You know, duck. If duck is on the menu I usually get that. There are probably other things too.

10.03.2026 02:51 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

It was an eye-opener when Toby Kornheiser told the story about going to Outback Steakhouse late one night, ordering a medium-rare steak and being told, β€œSorry, we’re out of medium-rare”

10.03.2026 02:49 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Thing is, if you're tempted to ask for "medium" or beyond because you don't trust the venue not to fuck up rare, you can't really trust it with chicken either

10.03.2026 02:44 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 1

Seems like this is compatible with β€œthe β€˜sea peoples’ were migrations as much or more than invasions”/β€œthe β€˜sea peoples’ were at least as much consequence as cause of the BAC?”

10.03.2026 02:45 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I fondly remember the restaurant menu whose doneness scale was:

Rare
Medium rare
Medium
Medium well
Order chicken

The War on Terror Paved the Way for Trump's Riseβ€”Now He's Making It His Own Only the total abolition of the DHS can restore freedom.

NEW @thenation.com: The tools of the War on Terror must be destroyed before Trump uses them to finish building his world order, at home and abroad. What we did at home yesterday is what we do in Iran today is what we will do at home tomorrow. The way we break the cycle is straightforward: abolition.

02.03.2026 14:22 πŸ‘ 566 πŸ” 191 πŸ’¬ 8 πŸ“Œ 3

Part of Trump’s mass appeal (and of why he’s so dangerous) is that he really seems to share Joe Barstool’s worldview that there are no complex problems: Everything has a simple brute solution, which previous leaders were somehow too stupid or weak to deploy.

Gullible, Cynical America The trouble with believing anything and nothing at the same time

The data economy has made us dumber in ways that also make us vulnerable to authoritarian takover. We are have become both cynical and gullible in the sense we think we are too jaded be fooled and as a result are tricked more easily www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
