Did you know that to get paid by the mile, the Transcontinental Railroad was built with unnecessary curves and swerves, making it much longer than it needed to be? The man who led the bribery scheme to make it happen was nicknamed the "King of Spades."

Meme. Copperplate engraving of Henry III from 1618, showing the king, in regalia, looking off with interest into the middle distance. He is wearing a rather spiky crown that would appeal to a shrike, and holding a scepter topped with a fleur-de-lis . His clothes look fancy. As they should. He's a fucking king. His beard is fierce, and his hair is wild and leonine. It cups his face in delicately destructive energy. His dark eyebrows are slightly sad looking, and his nose is less sharp than he'd like it. While his hair looks young, his face looks burdened with cares. Which, given his life, makes, sense.

His eyes are slightly sad, and he is looking past your right shoulder, as if someone is coming in the door behind you. But don't worry; nothing in his expression says that the person is here to hurt you. More likely they're going to ask if you know where the bathroom is. It's that kind of look that Henry's throwing.

Meme text reads:
"Kings need eels
That's aal there is to it"

Ever get a craving for a specific food, & nothing else will do? Well, you're not alone.

In February 1257 Henry III sent a message to Ely, telling the sheriff send him 200 large eels, 1250 medium-sized eels, & 4,000 small eels. And he wanted them ASAP.

Takeout fit for a king.

They would constantly discuss "Going to war" against rats.

How could we not have a Lord of the Rings reference from that?

That’s amazing, the conversion from $13,000 in 1971 to 2024 would be $101,269.

Could you imagine buying a similar home for just over $100,000?

Someone responding our posts mentioned Anaconda, Montana

How could I resist not looking up newspapers from Anaconda, Montana.

They did not disappoint. Here is a segment out of an 1887 article about immegration.

It’s a copy of conservative anti-immigration rhetoric used now.

Why would you make me look up the national average price of homes in 1903!?

I was happy just being depressed, but now I’m extra depressed becuase the national average home price was $2,000.

That’s $1,500 less than the advertisement in Butte, Montana.

Nationally, homes were even more affordable.

Out of all the horrific deaths and disasters we read in old newspapers, some of the more depressing things is how affordable these homes are.

And before you talk about conversion from 1903; $3,500 in 1903 has the same buying power as $125,480. Well below the $420,000 national average.
