Root mucilage helps plants balance water use: it limits transpiration when soil is wet and preserves hydraulic continuity as soil dries. High-mucilage genotypes conserve water early and maintain water uptake longer, making mucilage a promising trait for improving drought resilience.

Plants that produce more root mucilage keep water flowing longer as soils dry. By smoothing the drop in water potential at the root–soil interface, mucilage helps maintain transpiration and delays hydraulic stress, revealing its key role in sustaining plant function under drought.

Two-panel figure illustrating root hydraulic conductance in wheat cultivars. Panel (a) shows a line graph of pressure chamber measurements of root hydraulic conductance (Krs) over the years of release from 1900 to 2000, with a downward trend indicated by a dashed line and shaded confidence interval. Panel (b) presents CPlantBox simulations comparing root hydraulic conductance (Krs) over time (in days) for two cultivars: S. Dickkopf (1895) and Tommi (2002), with the older cultivar showing higher conductance.

I wasn't very sure why the handles on Bluesky were so long. Turns out that is a method for identity verification by which you can attach your own custom domain. I've had a website for a long time and was able to combine a couple steps to get LarryMYork.phenotyper.com as my handle. Want your own? 👇
