Even though I'm an economist, I wish there was more focus on the human suffering from this war and less focus on the economic consequences. Hundreds of little girls are dead, and we're worried about oil prices.

Literally shitting on the part that makes it intellectual development. It requires things like *reading* for yourself and *writing* for yourself. Those aren't chores, they're part of skills acquisition and critical development.

In a world of potlucks, Canada cannot rely on nostalgia for past parties. As the conflict in Iran deepens uncertainty about the global order, the states shaping the future will be those able to bring real capabilities to the table β and invitations to do so will hinge on what we bring. Operationalizing Davos means aligning rhetoric with resources, choosing partners with purpose, showing up when it counts and ensuring our institutions can backstop our promises. If we fail to adapt, the risk wonβt just be a lingering sense of exclusion, but diminished prosperity, reduced influence and, ultimately, weakened sovereignty in a far less forgiving international order.
I have a new Op-Ed on how the Carney government can operationalize Davos.
Based on an idea I developed with @thomasjuneau.bsky.social a few years ago but tweaked a bit for our ruptured times.

Yes. I was there. It wasn't a war, we were fish in a barrel.
Nice! This is only the beginning of solar season!
Today is definitely the sunniest day of the year thus far. #solar
On this International Womenβs Day, we remain vigilant about what we must protect.
And we remain determined about accomplishing the work ahead.
Black puddles by a gate
Now imagine peopleβs lungs.
Black rain has fallen over Tehran after strikes on oil facilities, coating streets and rooftops in dark, oily water. βThe rain is actually apparently saturated with oil,β CNN reports.
This video shows real smoke over Tehran from Israeli strikes on oil depots & fuel facilities last nightβconfirmed by NYT, AP, Al Jazeera, Times of Israel. Black clouds from burning hydrocarbonsβnot normal sunrise.
The scenes out of Tehran are horrifying.
What absolute madness.

It's morning in Tehran, but the sun cannot get through because the city is covered in black smoke from the oil refinieries/reserves targeted by IDF-US forces. The sun is blocked by Oil! Beyond the immediate consequences, this is accelerating the pathway towards a burning planet that is uninhabitable
Thank you
Olga, do you know whether the reports that burning oil is making its way through the sewage/waterways system of Tehran are verified?
One must assume that anyone who expresses surprise or "shock" that the IDF-US coalition is systematically attacking civilian infrastructure critical for life and is repeatedly commiting actions that kill civilians must have been living under a rock for the past 3 years.
Iranβs people were facing a horrible shortage of water before the war began. If we are destroying desalination plants and setting fire to Teheran we are committing unfathomable crimes.
