But in January, the Justice Department acknowledged in court documents that DOGE members had accessed and shared sensitive Social Security data without the awareness of agency officials.

Borges’s attorneys were told this year that the Office of Special Counsel would stop reviewing his allegations while the GAO conducts a government-wide review of DOGE’s access to sensitive data. However, the GAO audit does not provide protections to whistleblowers, raising concerns from legal experts that it will be difficult for people with sensitive information to come forward.

No offense to GAO here, but it is an auditor, nor a criminal investigator, which is what is needed. If the administration refuses to co-operate, or launch its own investigation, we will end up without real accountability.

Holy shit - this would be very, very bad:
"The databases, called “Numident” and the “Master Death File,” include records for more than 500 million living and dead Americans, including Social Security numbers, places and dates of birth, citizenship, race and ethnicity, and parents’ names."

This is the way a lot of us would like to think we would respond to hostile questions in a Congressional hearing, but its rare to see a witness just turn the tables on a Senator like this.

Satisfying to see @davidjbier.bsky.social absolutely dogwalk Sen. Kennedy here.

Kennedy is so far gone he doesn’t even seem to realize the “Blue-ski” posts he’s reading are the consensus view of most Americans and not some Marxist smoking gun or something.

Americans Have Never Had Less Recourse for the US Government Violating Rights: A Conversation With Steve Vladeck Accountability under both state and federal law faces high hurdles, but Congress could fix that

I sat down with @stevevladeck.bsky.social at @theunpopulist.net to discuss the hurdles to states potentially prosecuting ICE agents for murder and other crimes, and the need to fix Section 1983 so federal agents are subject to civil liability for violating people's rights.

A Trump Order Protected a Weedkiller. And Also a Weapon of War.

Trump's abrupt executive order last month boosting glyphosate production also had other effects:

1.) limited legal immunity to the makers of the weedkiller Roundup, a possible carcinogen.
2.) helping production of white phosphorus used in munitions that can violently burn people.

Why did Challenger, but not JOLTS, show an increase in layoffs the last three years?

The best reason to be against money for war in Iran is morality

I explain budgetary reasons against:
1) There's already funding from OBBBA, much of which is still unused
2) The military budget is huge & has flexibility to move some funds around

Congress should not provide additional funds for war
