In April 2024, the Council of Ministers approved Cyprus’s first separate National Strategy for Autism and Action Plan. This comprehensive framework includes 53 actions across seven pillars covering the individual's entire lifespan. #EDPD2025 #Cyprus
Maria Toumazou, Social Attaché of the Cyprus Permanent Representation to the EU, shared with the audience the country's major advancements in support for autistic citizens.
AE's key message: The EU must act strongly and actively in the Disability Strategy 2021-2030, ensuring resources are allocated for training and quality community services to replace institutional segregation.
During the Panel 1 Q&A at #EDPD2025, Ettore Foccardi, Board Member of Autism-Europe, spoke on the urgent need to support autistic people with high support needs.
"The discriminatory impact these barriers have on the exercise of one of the most foundational rights of EU law by persons with disabilities is not acceptable."
Markus Schefer (UN CRPD Committee) pointed out that Persons with disabilities face a dearth of administrative hurdles when exercising their right to freedom of movement in the EU. #EDPD2025
