A photograph of the Wanto Co. grocery store in Oakland, CA. The owner, Tatsuro Matsuda, placed a sign reading "I AM AN AMERICAN" on the front of the store on December 8, 1941, the day after the Pearl Harbor raid. The photograph was taken by Dorthea Lange sometime in March 1942.

Japanese Americans successfully gained redress for incarceration during the Reagan administration, survivors were given $20k and a formal apology. It doesn't make up for what they lost but it was an impressive achievement by the Japanese American community.

#OTD in 1944, the United States alien property custodian reports that the agency has taken over $29 million in properties from on the West Coast, with $27 million formerly owned by Japanese Americans. 51 businesses were seized, 43 of which were Japanese-owned, and will be liquidated.

#OTD in 1944, the Seattle Times publishes a story on Pvt. Nitsukaze "Mike" Miyake and his actions during the ongoing Battle of Monte Cassino. Miyake was commended for braving enemy shells to bring supplies and help the wounded. Miyake nonchalantly stated the barrage "wasn't so bad."

#OTD in 1944, the Washington State Elks Association adopted a resolution calling for the deportation of "all alien Japanese and all American citizens of Japanese descent who have been disloyal to the United States." The resolution was adopted at the Elks annual midwinter convention.

#OTD in 1944, the Seattle Times reports that Congress is again debating an amendment to denaturalize "once-disloyal Japanese Americans." Rep Leroy Johnson said tthis would only apply to those who renounced after the bill became law, while others want to apply it back to October 1940.

#OTD in 1944, Gordon Hirabayashi sends Attorney General J. Charles Dennis a letter and a loyalty questionnaire he received from a Seattle Draft Board. The questionnaire was sent to Japanese Americans, but Hirabayashi refused to answer the document and returned it to the draft board.

#OTD in 1944, a spokesman for Japan's Board of Information lists two unsolved murders among the "numerous outrages" committed against Japanese in the US. Jungo Kino and Shigemasa Yoshioka were shot in December 1941 and February 1942, respectively. Both murders occured in California.

#OTD in 1944, the Topaz camp director refutes Japanese claims that the camp has shot two incarcerees. The director confidently stated that only one incarceree, James Hatsuaki Wakasa, was shot while allegedly fleeing from a sentry. Wakasa was killed while walking his dog in April 1943.

#OTD in 1944, Sgt Ben Kuroki speaks about his military experience and pleads for tolerance. Kuroki served 30 missions and earned a Distinguished Flying Cross during the Ploesti raid. Still, he stated, "I don't know for sure if it's safe to walk the streets of my own country."
