Greenland is rich in natural resources – a geologist explains why
Greenland’s rare earth element deposits may be among the world’s largest by volume.
I appreciate this from @us.theconversation.com by Jonathan Paul.
However, I think it’s making a mistake I commonly hear geologists make with regards to current events.
I have a hunch that this mistake is one of the reasons geology programs are struggling 🧵🛠️🪨🧪

1/ Happy to share our preprint from the Greenleaf Lab: beCasKAS, our method to directly detect CRISPR base editor off-targets in primary cells. We additionally show how non-coding edits can be triaged for epigenetic dysregulation using deep learning.

This is NOT cute. Ph.D. level experts only cram in your pocket when they're really stressed.

The Trump administration covers the whole spectrum of sufficiently advanced stupidity to pure malice - and the end result in all cases is just an endless stream of evil.

Top figure: Diel transcription of TMED127 lanthanide-dependent methanol dehydrogenase (xoxF5) and glucose dehydrogenase (gdh) at Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) site, Sargasso Sea, North Atlantic Ocean. Transcription peaks in late afternoon each day over 5 days.
Bottom figure: Schematic of key metabolisms and functions in TMED127/Methylaecorales based on genomic reconstruction, showing the most highly transcribed proteins are shown (PQQ-dependent methanol dehydrogenase (XoxF), PQQ-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (GDH), and proteorhopsin (PR)).
New preprint is out where we report a new obligate (?) methylotrophic bacteria with diel cycle of methanol dehydrogenase transcription in surface seawater, with implications for marine lanthanide and carbon cycling. Where the methanol comes from is a mystery! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

I am calling for the immediate removal of an HHS Secretary that does not believe in *GERM THEORY*.
If we scientists and healthcare professionals cannot bring enough muscle to push the government into ousting him, we are lost as professions.

Revised and Extended: What's Happening Inside the NIH and NSF
I’ve unfortunately needed to add more material to my post from yesterday. The re-election of Donald Trump is looking like the biggest act of American self-destruction since the Civil War.
Same link, new title and some updates.

I am a biologist working on organizing rn. Even I was not aware until recently that RFK Jr literally does not believe in germ theory. He believes in miasma or "terrain" theory. Openly. In 2025.
He rejects vaccines and he rejects medicine based on germ theory.
That will kill untold numbers.

58 Democrats helped Republicans pass the Laken Riley Act, which will enable Trump's ICE to put migrants *accused* of shoplifting in detention, without due process.
As in, with Trump's new call to detain 30,000 migrants in Guantanamo, these Democrats may help put them there:
