The removal of the remaining hereditary peers is long overdue.
No one should inherit a lifelong seat in Parliament purely on the basis of who their parents were.
But Lords reform mustnβt stop here.
The govt must bring forward its promised consultation on the future of the Lords.

We saw a big victory last night as the bill to remove the last hereditary peers from the House of Lords finally passed, after months of spurious delays and heel dragging. electoral-reform.org.uk/the-end-of-t...
There is one place that the government is backing 'fire and re-hire' - and that's the House of Lords. Up to 15 hereditary peers could be brought back as life peers following a deal made to remove the remaining aristocratic legislators.
There is no place in a modern democracy for people influencing our laws due to an accident of birth. But neither should there be for people due to the politicians they pleased, or the donations they made.
The removal of the remaining hereditary peers is a long-overdue reform. Yet, progress must not stall here, and the government now needs to move onto reforming the Lords into a smaller, democratic chamber, with members chosen by and accountable to the people of this country.

U.S. Congressman Jared Huffman says the moral and intellectual clarity of humanism is exactly what global politics needs.

Faith groups control vast areas of land worldwide. But who holds them accountable for the environmental impact?
At the UN Human Rights Council, Humanists International called for stronger environmental accountability from religious landholders.

Humanists UK. Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful, without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?' Douglas Adams. Author and humanist.
DON'T PANIC. And always carry a towel.
Today, we're celebrating the life of the humanist and author Douglas Adams, born #onthisday 1952.
He is sorely missed, but his books remain some of the funniest and most imaginative explorations of the absurdity of life, the universe, and everything.
It's good to see the UK Government recognise that Religious Education can play a role in bringing communities together.
When taught objectively and pluralistically, it can help pupils better understand the diversity of modern society and foster mutual understanding.

Unfortunately, however, state-funded faith schools work against community cohesion. By segregating children by religion (something looked upon as simply unacceptable in any other public service), faith schools are literally dividing communities. www.justgiving.com/page/nofaith...
If a child is encouraged to think objectively about religion in the classroom, that's directly undermined by having them pray at the start of every school day. Assemblies should include all children, regardless of religion or belief background. humanists.uk/2026/03/11/w...
Compulsory collective worship serves a different purpose. It presents a single belief as normative and authoritative. It positions itself as devotional, not educational, undermining the aims and objectives of RVE to educate children about, rather than lead them to adopt, particular religions.
If you think no child should be made to pray at school, or else be excluded and alienated from their peers, then please do sign our petition calling for inclusive assemblies today.

The move to remove hereditary peers is welcome. The next step should be to remove the Lords Spiritual. There should be no reserved seats in Parliament for any one religion. Itβs time to remove bishops from the House of Lords.

Having 26 representatives of one denomination of one religion, wielding political power simply because they're CofE, is not representative of the country. It's also just deeply unpopular. Any modernisation of the Lords should end this 14th century anachronism. humanists.uk/action/get-b...
People want greater choice in politics.
First Past The Post isn't up to scratch. We need Proportional Representation.

Will we see hereditary peers just handed life peerages so they can stay in the chamber and continue to influence our laws? electoral-reform.org.uk/hereditary-p...
The House of Lords is meant to revise and scrutinise legislation. It is not meant to veto the will of the Commons through procedural games.
Watch this moment from Parliament as MPs debate whether the UK should move toward proportional representation during discussion of the Representation of the People Bill.
