One first decision after diagnosis was that I would continue: continue to work, continue to have fun, continue to laugh, continue to hope. Luckily I was always a person with a quite digital life. Using eye tracking you can still do a lot. Especially as a software developer.

Don’t deprioritize curiosity-driven research Around the world, governments are demanding that research funding follow broader political priorities. They should be careful what they wish for.

β€ž[…] China, where the state’s involvement in science has historically been stronger than in the United States and most of Europe, is taking another approach: it is boosting funding for fundamental research.β€œ

Thank you for your article. It was an interesting read. There’s a small error, looks like nasty autocorr: R2Tg in STITCHR is found in zebra finch.

MT shape and orientation in what sense? Nucleators at MTOCs determine protofilament number and therefore impact MT shape. MT polarity as a consequence of nucleation, shapes and orients MTs as long as they remain anchored, wouldnβ€˜t it?

Apparently Affinity was purchased by Canva only very recently. Canva appears not to be anti-subscription in general. So one way could be to start charging over time. Or as you say, for in-app purchases. Still, I am curious to what extent β€šbasicβ€˜ figure making can become free?

Been a fan since v1 so I’ll give v3 a try, too. I liked how easy it was to switch from adobe products. And so far I’ve never missed any feature. Any estimates how much academia funnels into adobe per year?

This is big news for academics, a fully* featured, modern vector editor software for free (hopefully) forever. We should be sad when research money is unnecessarily directed to the adobe whirlpool of subscriptions.

My final postdoctoral work will come out very soon, so watch this space 🧐.

In Amsterdam, I aim to decipher the molecular mechanisms of (cancer)-cell migration and adhesion using structural biology approaches. Positions available soon, so please reach out when you are interested! 😁

This one is a bit of a departure from the usual and definitely a work in progress!

We found that by using ab initio reconstruction at very high res, in very small steps, we could crack some small structures that had eluded us - e.g. 39kDa iPKAc (EMPIAR-10252), below.

Bluetorial-A dream and a bit of a nightmare

Serving as Editor-in-Chief at Science was fascinating. I greatly enjoyed working with talented and committed editorial, news, graphics, and production staff. But the inside look into scientific publishing and AAAS was also deeply disillusioning.

Very sad news today… Joan was director when I joined @IRBBarcelona.org and I owe him this great opportunity. He has led us to become not only a place for excellent science, but also a warm, friendly and collegial environment, a rare combination. We continue in Joan’s spirit, he will be missed!

Molecular architectures of centrosomes in C.Β elegans embryos visualized by cryo-electron tomography Tollervey etΒ al. use cryo-electron tomography to capture 3D snapshots of centrosomes at molecular resolution in their near-native state inside embryonic C.Β elegans cells in different stages of cell division. They characterize structural features of centrioles during their assembly and of a disordered matrix that nucleates and organizes mitotic spindle microtubules.

Mahamid and Woodruff labs use cryo-ET to look at mitotic centrosomes: Stunned to see the pericentriolar matrix taking shape, and what seem to be β€šS size’ gamma-tubulin complex oligomers capping the end of 11-pf microtubules.
