Just to make these hairs extra useful, you need a good microscope to even see them properly. And good luck even finding them if the wing is in the slightest crumpled or covered by the fore wings.
TBH, counting Hemulis would often be an easier and better way of telling species apart.
2/2 Pretty much all my wasps have three hamuli (those hooked hairs) close to the body. But further out on the wing there's another group. If you count the hairs there, you can sometimes tell species apart. Or more often, go "the left and right wings are not separate species dammit".
Well, wasps have two pairs of wings. The front and back wings often need to stay together in flight. So the front edge of the back wing has a few small hooked hairs. Those hook onto the back of the front wing.. somewhere.. I've never actually seen them attached. 1/2
What's the possessive of hamuli, BTW? "hamuli's" doesn't look right.🤔
For some other Ophioninae wasps, we got very excited by the proximal hamuli (the regular hamuli's little sisters that absolutely no one uses, and many forget even exist).
A species which couldn't be told apart otherwise had just two of them. Promising.. until we realised one had got torn off.
A good compromise, I'm tempted!
When they are useful they genuinely are useful, but that's not often. I've got some Ophioninae wasps where the shape of the hamuli is the best way to tell species apart.
Even then though, I'm telling people to check if some microscopic hairs are more bent than coiled spiralish..
After all these years, I may just have found out why I had so much hassle with some of my maps in QGIS becoming impossibly huge.
Olin unohtaa keskiviikon kohokohdan! Käykää äänestämässä parasta konvehtia!
Tämä oli vaikea! Varsinkin kun en muista kummankaan makua kovin hyvin (ilmiselvästi hankittava tutkimusaineistoa).
Mutta kysyin jälkikasvulta neuvoa ja käski äänestää 1
My first flash drive held 8MB and it was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen. And it was EXPENSIVE
Makes sense. And I guess Gimp works with the uncompressed image which is why it becomes 750 MB. Now I'm wondering what happens if I open that 40 MB compressed file in Gimp and save that, would I manage to avoid having a 750 MB wasp file cluttering up my storage without losing quality. 🤔
I can remember the time when USB flash drives were advertised as having several tens of megabytes of space.
I just opened a 250 MB picture of a wasp in Gimp, upon which it became 750 MB. Then I exported it as PNG and it shrank to 40 MB while still having as good a resolution.
No, I have no idea what's going on, image manipulation like this is just superstitious behaviour for me.
An international group of researchers proposes a new, more sustainable approach for welfare states to update their policies. It is presented in a newly published open-access book.

What can hedgehogs hear? 🦔
Researchers studied the ear anatomy of European hedgehogs using micro-CT scans, finding tiny middle ear bones and a cochlea perfectly shaped for detecting high-frequency sound.

* eikun siis suuremmalla (kohta rupean korjaamaan korjauksen korjausta)
Coauthor suggests dropping the number of hamuli (don't ask) from the species description because it's too variable. One African wasp has 8 in the left wing, 9 in the right wing.
I think my coauthor may have a point..
Reviewer 2: "I had difficulty finding the analysis code, suggest renaming the file something else than 🤖💭⚙️.🦔"
Me: "I have increased the cuteness factor of the .hedgehog file by adding a bunny to the name."
Today I learned that you can use emojis in filenames! From today onwards, my research data shall be ever so cutely named and unusable for any actual research.
Tiedostonimikin on turhan akateeminen.
