Admired Jonathan Sterne's work. Didn't have the pleasure to know him. His influence is notable among practitioners of all kinds... writers, artists, musicians... Feeling gratitude right now.
anyone interested in owning a copy can officially pre-order a copy through the publisher website next week. I will definitely share a link and if you'd help me out with any boosts I sure would appreciate it! the sooner the 1000 copies get bought up 2/3
You are invited to the Photoecologies Study Group, a new space for exploring photography as an environmental, elemental and energetic assemblage. To find out more about and register to attend our upcoming events, see our eventbrite page: www.eventbrite.com/o/photoecolo... .
What are the emergency plans for @archive.org ? Musk and the Trump Administration will surely target it. It is vulnerable because it is an US-based NGO. Are there backup plans outside of US control? We need an European initiative!

Nice read about the insides of LLMs, featuring their failure at compositional tasks and their need of external chain of thoughts: "It’s mimicking something that it has seen, but it doesn’t have full understanding of it” www.quantamagazine.org/chatbot-soft...
"Too much history had passed for that to be possible: the music was much more than the notes." Val Wilmer features in the first episode of the podcast Much More than the Notes by Ruben Coll for the radio of the @museoreinasofia.bsky.social radio.museoreinasofia.es/en/much-more...
LUMI premiere at @transmediale.bsky.social ! This Sunday our latest video essay will be screened, as part of the festival programme. The session will be followed by a conversation with Marco Ferrari @marcoferrari.bsky.social.
A new review of Living Surfaces, by Yangqiao Lu, in M+E journal. Many interesting points and open questions, such as the avoidance of surface in plant studies & ecomedia, and re. scale when aesthetic discussions are connected to historical accounts of science. mediaenviron.org/article/1265...
Hey, I published a thing! Very excited to have this piece out in Heliotrope. On scale in tech, and scaling down and why we must think with smaller scales.

As Black Friday purchases begin to arrive at your door, consider their packaging — more than likely in cardboard boxes. These "abject objects," @shannonmattern.bsky.social writes, are touchpoints to a global apparatus of commerce, consumption & waste. They bring the logistics chain to our doorsteps.
Chris Marker, "Moments to remember are just like other moments. They are only made memorable by the scars they leave", perhaps also relevant for scars at the landscape scale: www.scientificamerican.com/article/what...
Calming my last nerve with a free replay of the Carolyn Enger recital I saw on Sunday afternoon at Klavierhaus in Manhattan. I wrote the notes for her CD, so I'm maybe not wholly objective… but this is some deft programming and selfless playing. www.youtube.com/live/qZYVo_w...
The British Society for Literature and Science has just published a very generous review of our book, Living Surfaces, by Chloé Germaine. What a nice surprise, with many key ideas so clearly summarized in the text: www.bsls.ac.uk/2024/12/gil-...
A few days ago we had a conversation with Asijit Datta, head of the department of Media Studies at the Easwari School of Liberal Arts in Chennai, India. It revolved around our book Living Surfaces, and its political and aesthetic implications. Here's the link to it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAb4...
I've been trying to figure out how I might organize the next volume of #othernetworks, assuming a publisher might be interested. the pre-internet networks I describe in Other Networks: A Radical Technology Sourcebook are organized by underlying infrastructure loriemerson.net/2024/03/14/t... 1/4
