Comic. Someone is claiming to predict the exact date of a future earthquake. Should you listen? [flowchart: start] โ NO (There are big earthquakes constantly, so if anyone ever *does* figure this out, it will be immediately obvious that their method works and then the worldโs seismologists will not shut up about it. You wonโt need this flowchart.)

Has anyone tried to digitise this map and use it for a source model inversion?

A M8.8 earthquake just ruptured the subduction zone offshore Russiaโs Kamchatka peninsula. This is one of the worldโs truly huge earthquakes, and a triggered tsunami is currently traveling across the Pacific ocean.
This same fault ruptured on July 20th in a M7.4, and last August in a M7.1.

Ignore the concrete driveway and focus on the brown hill in the background behind the arch and peeking over the sliding gate.
Bell-shaped graph comparing earthquake magnitude and frequency (left) to total energy release in TNT equivalents (right). Includes notable earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, impacts, and explosions. Shows that smaller earthquakes happen frequently, while large ones are rare but extremely energetic.
What do a magnitude 5 earthquake, a nuclear bomb test, and the Mount St. Helens eruption have in common? They all released about the same amount of energy.
We're excited to share that we've updated the classic "How Often Do Earthquakes Occur?" figure with new data and examples!

Thanks for having me @egu.eu and thanks to all that came to my talk on interseismic strain from #insar - had a blast! #EGU25
EGU'ers head to session G3.5 tomorrow morning to see my talk on the temporal evolution of strain rate from InSAR ๐ฐ๏ธ
09:48 in K2 - see you there! #EGU25
Itโs nice to be at #EGU25 with people that take science seriously, but itโs also weird to be here when science is under assault in the US. Iโm currently in a talk by a NASA climate scientist who wasnโt allowed to attend the meeting and the talk had to be given by a Norwegian colleague. ๐ฉ
CL4.18 - 14:15 on Thursday at #EGU25 to see @staitis.bsky.social do his thang @egu.eu

Shakemap by USGS for the M7.7 earthquake in Myanmar on Mar 28, 2025. Shaking expected up to violet. There will be heavy damage.
The USGS already released a shakemap for the M7.7 #earthquake in Myanmar a few minutes ago. This will be devastating. โ๏ธ๐งช
