Just my slides for today. I’m sure my students already made the connection to the workplace thing because it went viral, but the feminine vices and virtues thing is just so much the subject of Wollstonecraft’s critique in that book that it is actually disturbing how relevant she still is.

Teaching Wollstonecraft is truly wild right now

Helen Maria Williams wrote an 8-volume history of the French Revolution (Letters from France) and definitely directly participated in it. She wasn’t personally a “major” actor but she knew all the major actors though.

Watching this made me finally understand why Swift yelled about wool so much. Can someone commune with his ghost and get him to write another modest proposal?

I am truly in awe of what my students come up with for response papers. The last time I taught Burke and Paine, I got an ASPCA style Burkean ad: “End the Revolution. Save Marie Antoinette.” This year I got a Paine infomercial: “1800NOKINGS.” #c18 satire lives.

I just officially left the other place so, hi new followers! I’m writing a literary history of structural sexism organized around representations of women’s political accessorizing in the long 18th century.

Asking students to write their own parody of Pamela continues to be the best assignment ever. One of my students did a parody in the form of a Mr B AITA post and the student made me one of the people who replied. Like what can I say? Yes I would reply and complain it’s not realistic.

In my #18thc class today, I mentioned the masquerade in Pamela 2 because one of my students asked what women could do besides Pamela’s list of wifely duties, and then in a moment of inspiration, I said it’s 2 Pamela 2 furious and I almost started crying we were laughing so hard.

The fun thing about the lecture I’m about to give on Aristotle’s poetics is it secretly just a lecture about Clarissa.

My director told me to put it in quotes once “because it’s not published yet,” but I have no idea what the consensus is.

Lol #c18th friends we do not talk enough about the time Burke, before becoming a monarchy apologist, compared George III to Milton’s Satan and claimed he was “hurled from his throne” during the Regency crisis.

I also read a few essays on women in ballads. If that interests you, let me know, and I’ll get you the titles too.

For my Edgeworth stuff, I’ve looked at Pakenham’s The Year of Liberty and The Women of 1798.

Conservatives React To The ‘Woke’ Barbie Movie With some critics calling the blockbuster hit a “feminist nightmare,” The Onion asked conservatives what they thought of the “woke” Barbie movie, and this is what they said.

“Hey, the main Barbie was white, so no complaints here.”

Lol I really should start posting those again. I probably have more prints on my phone. I’ve been writing about jewels and they’re nowhere near as fun.
