The Board of Governors decided, unilaterally, that no published textbook in the field of sociology could be used in compliance with the law for an Intro to Sociology class. None.
Victor: There's not a single existing textbook on the market that could be used that would qualify under state law?
Zachary: Correct.
Victor: I'm sorry, that's kind of funny. Like, the absurdity of not a single sociology textbook getting past the censors. I mean, it makes me kind of proud of our colleagues, but...

I do want to shout-out my fellow sociologists, who have collectively created a discipline so woke that not a single one of our introductory textbooks can make it past Florida's censors.

Great work everyone.

Opening a revise & resubmit one and a half years after submission feels like being a character in a John Updike novel—resenting your wife and primogeniture and fantasizing about stepping out to buy tobacco and never coming back.

Assortative Matching at the Top of the Distribution: Evidence from the World's Most Exclusive Marriage Market (July 2022) - Using novel data on peerage marriages in Britain, I find that low search costs and marriage-market segregation can generate sorting. Peers courted in the London Season, a matching techno...

When Queen Victoria’s mourning disrupted the "London Season" (elite marriage market), peer-commoner intermarriage rose by 40%, marital wealth sorting fell by 30%, and peers' political power declined as a result. www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=...

There’s a longstanding question: how much of the union wage premium is accounted for by selection (unions focus on more profitable firms to unionize) vs rent sharing (unions increase workers’ share of the profits)

Well, superb new work by Raffaele Saggio & co answers this…!

Do languages open doors? A theoretical model of linguistic capital and (im)mobility and its application in Spanish youth migration Language skills have demonstrated their significance in migration decisions; however, their role as a potential cause of immobility has been largely overlooked. In this paper, I first propose a the...

Under what circumstances can linguistic capital operate as an enabler of mobility or as a spatial constraint? I theorize about this in my PhD chapter, now published in the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies:

Ps. being unintelligible is not synonymous with intelligence, it only shows that you are French

12.02.2024 11:06 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

During Bs., you write in a fancy manner because you believe that being unintelligible is being intelligent; then you learn that the key lies in clarity. In the end, you end up writing like a 5 year old because the reviewer is going to understand your sampling strategy backwards.
