It's quite disheartening to see how rampant ableism is among roller coaster enthusiasts, as they act like they are experts on disabled people. The fact is, they lack lived experience and knowledge.

Following as Australia's SPA would not allow a Deaf Auslan-using to be a member so I cannot access to anything related to the field. Interesting to see how other countries' do.
Skilled deaf readers exhibit BILATERAL hierarchical tuning in the visual word form system, unlike matched hearing readers. We suggest a shift from bilateral to left-lateralized processing is not necessary for successful reading. New paper led by Laurie Glezer. direct.mit.edu/nol/article/...

Everything. Else. Is. A. Galaxy.
I would say its all of that plus more - medical and social interferences as well. Even now with far less number of signers who are high proficient and deaf compared to past. Im keen to see what Wyatt add as well.
graphic of branching lifelines, with the path taken traced through it. past paths no longer in play are greyed out, possible future paths spread out like a network of roots in front
The future is a web of branching paths, and each choice opens up new possibilities as it closes others. This is as true for a civilization as it is for an individual. The more our collective intelligence can inform each choice, the better our chances of finding paths through to a beautiful future.
Getting tired of seeing the label 'young language' for signed languages. Let's be real here - those are the most interfered languages. Recently, its more obv. - so much modified by non-deaf signers that deaf signers cannot maintain/streamline grammar effectively. Agree?
Fab! It was something I've always argued about (myself <3yo AoA) and yours just prove as much. This kind of evidence can be presented to show another angle on language acquisition/development - pro/cons etc. Thank you.
Did they mention the starting age of acquisition and type and duration of exposure to signed languages and models?
Yes, and they remove specifically designed accommodations in fear of over-reliance.
One of your avid followers here - please keep going as its critical situ here in Australia as I am seeing lot of adults with severe issues in life due to inaccessible language experiences. And it is harder when we try to explain to their families why...
#AcademicSky, let's get to know each other! Quote with this: 1) a project you're working on & 2) an idea you aren't working on but keep thinking about.
1) Working with small team developing national Auslan teachers training program, & 2) Auslan signacy skills assessment for adults (deaf & hearing).
*snickers* yep
I know - needs to plan very well for this to happen!
Would this happen next year as Im attending ASLTA's conference in early July.
I am living this one - a good quote to live by if you're able to.
