Research published in Royal Society journals in 2026 to be free to access as libraries back Subscribe to Open | Royal Society The Royal Society is pleased to confirm that its eight world-class subscription journals will be published as open access in 2026 as libraries support its Subscribe to Open (S2O) strategy.

This is happening! Direct support by funders to non-profit publishes offering journals open for free to authors and readers seems like a way forward! royalsociety.org/news/2026/02...

However, the benefits to learned societies should not be tied to publication costs that institutions and researchers from low- and middle-income regions cannot afford!

Yes, we should avoid β€œyou-pay-you-publish” journals that know how to inflate their impact factors but engage in dubious editorial practices.

But nowadays even reviews seem to be written by AI bsky.app/profile/carl...! I think we have no choice but to publish reviewer’s names with accepted papers! Some journals do it, I’m sorry to say learned society-based ones lag behind☹

Peer Review is broken because a generation of Editors were trained that peer review is sacrosanct. Thus we have Editors who are clerks, sending and re-sending manuscripts to reviewers until they are happy. That's not the job. Be an Editor, not a clerk. Use your skill and judgement. Make decisions.

I think people will keep doing all sorts of things as long as they remain anonymous. We should take responsibility for what we write in reviews by signing them an making them public.

And we should all sign our review if we want to be sure its not done by AI

Agreed, but learned society journals should strive to become more open and inclusive! Is this OK for our journals to hide behind paywalls that preclude free access by researchers from low income countries? More here: trulyopenscience.blogspot.com/2025/09/why-...

#eseb2025 talks were great so far. Subjective ranking of the most common quotes:
- theory and modeling: "with this very simple approach"
- genomics: "using methodology you all know"
- plenaries: "Nature/Science" in the bottom right of a slide
- posters: "una cerveza por favor"

This makes it unjustifiable to still count with thousands of unpaid hours, worth billions of dollars, from reviewers (eg doi.org/10.1186/s410...) and others, such as editorial board members in this case.

How Scientific Publishers’ Extreme Fees Put Profit Over Progress Last month, the editorial team of NeuroImage resigned over the β€œunethical fees” charged by the journal’s publisher, Elsevier. Can scientists ditch the for-profit system?

We need urgent changes in academic publishing, which costs research institutions too much, draining important resources from science to unparalled high profit margins for big publishers (eg www.thenation.com/article/soci...).
