Poland 🇵🇱
#MartaŻerkowska-Balas et al: 🇵🇱 demonstrates regression & contestation. Judicial and media reforms have undermined liberal safeguards. Yet electoral competition and civic mobilisation still serve as crucial arenas of polarised conflict.

Italy 🇮🇹
#ManuelaCaiani & #BatuhanEren highlight heterogeneity of 🇮🇹 illiberal sphere - parties, social & more fluid movements. Importantly, 🇮🇹 functions as a transnational hub where domestic populism connects to European far-right networks, shaping national & EU-level politics.

Hungary 🇭🇺
@zsolt.bsky.social #BalintMikola & @veghzsuzsanna.bsky.social show illiberalism in a consolidating 🇭🇺 electoral autocracy: institutional capture, constitutional engineering, & patronage networks entrenching power. Majoritarian legitimacy is invoked to hollow out remaining liberal checks.

Great Britain 🇬🇧
#AlexBaxter discusses how Brexit reshaped democratic competition. Illiberal pressure appears via securitisation, protest restrictions, and executive strain.
Strategic accommodation by mainstream actors is key.

France 🇫🇷
@caterinafr.bsky.social et al illustrate the illiberal dynamics of discursive convergence. RN reframes debates on judicial independence, media pluralism, laïcité, & equality in ways that challenge liberal norms. Radical-right frames migrate into mainstream competition

Czech Republic 🇨🇿
@alesmichal.bsky.social and I show that while institutions remain intact, for now, the discursive pressure is rising.
Technocratic populist (ANO) and radical-right (SPD) mobilization normalizes illiberal frames.
No systemic rupture — yet. But vigilance matters.

Austria 🇦🇹
#MarvinStecker et al highlight that 🇦🇹downgrade to “electoral democracy” reflects more than FPÖ success.
The FPÖ mainstreamed anti-elite and anti-science narratives.
Voters still support “democracy” — but trust erodes, and liberal norms weaken

Across cases, decline is rarely dramatic.
• normalisation of anti-liberal discourse
It unfolds through:
• normalization of anti-liberal discourse
• strategic weakening of oversight institutions
• exploitation of the gap between democratic ideals and democratic satisfaction

Core insight:
@veghzsuzsanna.bsky.social: The illiberal challenge in Europe is neither uniform nor monolithic. Illiberal actors differ in ideology, strategy & voter base; combining nationalist, religious, xenophobic, & populist narratives in distinct ways. Understanding this variation is 🗝️

Vicente Valentim, Elias Dinas, & I came together to do this paper because we have all long shared an intution: mainstream center-right rhetoric shapes democratic norms. The hard part? Showing it empirically. We make some headway in this new paper. Grateful to @bjpols.bsky.social for publishing.

A core implication of the book is that it seeks to revive basic descriptive research to lay the groundwork for stronger and more inclusive theories of democracy.
