W H Hudson wrote in A Shepherds Life (1910) about motor cars in Salisbury roads, ‘until the loathed hooting and dusting engines are thrust away into roads of their own there is little pleasure in them [roads] for the man on foot’. 115 years later and Salisbury never got the bypass he was suggesting
