THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!
The criticisms of The Bride! are valid, from a certain perspective. I wonder if they're not a function of expectations of maximalist, big budget studio fantasy, considering the other films facing similar criticism. I loved it. Free to all. #horror

Comet a brown coated hound sleeps on a fur rug in front of a fireplace. A guitar and small bookcase are next to him. Its a very Edward Hopper-esque image.

Here are the Top 5 Dogs of the week!
It's something I've been trying to get off my chest for a while and you wrote it wonderfully.
Additionally, I don't need movies to reflect my worldview %100. I'd much rather engage with stories that challenge it. Makes me really think on my values and how to impart those on others.
Very good thread concerning certain audiences (too online) expecting movies to have the 'Perfect' cogent socio-political message for our fraught times.
And when the sky darkens and the prospect is war
Who's given a gun and then pushed to the fore
And expected to die for the land of our birth
Though we've never owned one lousy handful of earth?βπΏβπ½βπ»

Listen to your children read. Read to your children. Read alongside your children. Take them to libraries. Talk about what reading means to you & what it can unlock.
Tell them it doesnβt matter if itβs comics, magazines or books as long as theyβre engaged with the written word. #WorldBookDay
Project Hail Mary was so good! Seems like the movie captures the spirit of it. Can't wait!
I mean, yes? But that's kind of what makes the movie goth punk rock mic drop. It is an eternal scream about all the people suffering under patriarchy.
Jessie Buckley in "The Bride!"
THE BRIDE!: An imperfect movie I thoroughly enjoyed. Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale turn BONNIE AND CLYDE into a monsters-on-the-run love story, while Maggie Gyllenhaal doesn't worry if her film's feminist themes are too on-the-nose for you. Looks great, sounds great, lots of people will hate it.
I saw The Bride! tonight--wildly audacious and accomplished, and in fascinating dialogue with monster movies, musicals, and Bonnie and Clyde. Jessie Buckley is beyond-belief great. Huge swings like this & Wuthering Heights are why we need studios--it takes real $$ and support of vision to make them.
Ebert famously hated this movie when it was released. My piece isn't really about criticizing Ebert, but I do address his position and use it as a way to challenge how we write about acting and collaboration in movies made by male geniuses.
This is Hippo. He's visiting Scotland for the first time. Had no idea they made squeaky toys for humans too. 14/10 (TT: kelseydarragh)
As I said on Boxd felt like Haneke by way of an edge lord poster. You can be provocative to a tasteless degree but you have to back it up with something interesting to say.
Agreed. Deeply unpleasant in an completely artless way. I truly donβt know what Francoβs deal is beyond βeveryone is shit and let me show you just how!β
a photo of an australian shepherd with unique coloring. his snout and forehead are brown and tan, but the rest of his head and chest are white. he has one light ear and one dark one. heβs standing on a bright green patch of grass and facing the camera. his brown tail tipped with white is a puffy blur behind him.
This is Milow. He knows beauty comes from the inside, but he also happens to have it on the outside. 14/10 rare as h*ck (IG: aussiemilow_)
EEPHUS is a thing of wonder. I say that as one who doesnβt care about baseball, has only bad memories of team sports, dislikes movies about swarms of men, & normally loathes the term βwonder.β Itβs William Kennedy, itβs Waiting for Godot. I think of Paul Hardingβs great novel of tick, tock, TINKERS.

Michel Francoβs βDreamsβ comes to mindπ‘.
Its a fun prompt but rather than anger because at least thats emotionally engaging with the piece the more disappointing experience is pure indifferent boredom. Thatβs βEddingtonβ for me despite Aster practically begging us to be mad at it.
this is why the whole βoh, suffering creates great artβ thing is bullshit

S4 has some great outings BBW2, Family, Dataβs Day, The Drumhead, and Redemption. But really stands out for providing βThe Woundedβ as a DS9 prequel. Colm Meaney getting his own episode to shine and introduces us to the Cardassians.
