No one here was talking about the La Maison des Bois restoration and I missed it. This is the real problem with Bluesky. Pialat not Platner

I'm pretty sure EVERYTHING ELSE IS NOISE is the best film Nicolás Pereda's ever made. It's like the very best Hong films: sculpted, sardonic, poetic, somehow both kind and pitiless.
“Sugar Glass Bottle”: Quite interesting as a modest yet decisive dry run for HAPPYEND, as Sora makes room for both stark confrontation and the pleasures of companionship, all under cover of night with a surprisingly downbeat ending; beautiful use of Hosono too.
Above all else this brilliantly weaponizes Davika Hoorne’s slightly otherworldly yet friendly screen presence, even in the scenes where she’s incarnated as the vacuum cleaner (which I was pleasantly surprised isn’t in the entire film); wish I liked the frame story a tad more.
A USEFUL GHOST: Doesn’t always nail the slowly dovetailing storylines, but Ratchapoom’s integration of delightful surreality into a sobering examination of how righteous struggles can get co-opted and twisted by oppressive forces is impressive; definitely promising.
Had the great pleasure of guesting on the Deep Cut Podcast as part of their Hong Sang-soo series, talking about one of his most special masterpieces HILL OF FREEDOM, his extraordinary oeuvre, and my Notarized writing project: www.deepcutpod.com/episodes/125...
Maybe it was just the experience of seeing the first two Jackass movies back to back but I did definitely feel a little bit of exhaustion, and ending with the fake bomb is an enormous gamble that doesn’t fully work for me; and yet there’s the teeter-totter, the riot control…
JACKASS NUMBER TWO: Trades some of the pell-mell free-floating energy of the first for some more involved, equally or even crazier gags, which Tremaine and company execute with aplomb; not everything hits but there’s so much here to appreciate one way or another.
Half the profits from last year's theatrical release of the PTU restoration was used to keep Johnnie To's Next Wave Film Festival, a significant stepping stone for up and coming filmmakers, alive. Maybe somebody can convince him to restore The Odd One Dies which he owns himself.
I’m certain I had seen it before but have no memory of it, FANTASIA 2000 was always clearer to me; the James Wong Howe(!)-shot interstitials, especially that little improvised jazz number, are so delightful, and ending with “Night on Bald Mountain”/“Ave Maria” is perfect.
/FANTASIA/: Amidst wild ambition and swings in focus, it’s quite moving to see something this dedicated to explicating and evoking the primacy of art for art’s sake, using a collage of styles in one medium to pay homage to the ineffability of the other; stunning beyond measure.

When you want the censorship bureau to know that your movie is definitely not about life in the PRC.
I contributed an essay for this Blu-ray. One of my favorite films of the decade.
New for subscribers only: I spent a week watching iQIYI movies again. Films by Chris Huo, Qin Pengfei, and of course, Raquel.
Gianfranco Rosi's exquisite BELOW THE CLOUDS, sure to be one of the best documentaries of the year, begins its US theatrical release today; I reviewed it last fall alongside THE SECRET AGENT for Taipei Mansions/Stray Comrades: straycomrades.substack.com/p/of-time-an...
Happy birthday @tanyagoldman.bsky.social!
Over at OLD NEW I wrote about the best film of 2026 so far, Yuen Woo-ping's Blades of the Guardians: oldnew.substack.com/p/wuxia-wisd...

It's a gorgeous film about how we barely know those closest to us & need them more than we realise. It never calls attention to this.
it ought to be interesting to see how the midterms shake out. lots of candidates out there. make sure you read up on them between now and november or else you’ll be looking pretty silly in the voting booth
do you think you could drink a 12-ounce can of soda of your choosing every day for a week for 76 million dollars? the catch is that during that week, you’re not allowed to travel to columbus, georgia unless you already had plans to or you just want to
Father Mother Sister Brother is Jarmusch's best film in 30 years. Everyone in it is delightful, and then, to top it all off, Françoise Lebrun drops by for one scene and totally wrecked me.
Now the Lunar New Year's in full swing, is this the year the deleted scene from A Chinese Odyssey 2002 where Tony Leung and Faye Wong go full Love on a Diet fat suits from eating and drinking so much while endlessly trying to see each other off is finally unearthed?
the "hockey ball" that hockey fans refer to is hardly a ball at all. the top and bottom have been sliced down, rendering it more of a disc-like projectile, but it typically moves so quickly that few observers ever notice. the remainder is used to manufacture goalie shelters at each end of the rink
windows pcs are generally for casual users who mostly use it for web browsing and maybe a little gaming. linux is nearly identical except there's no keyboard. macs are for hardcore experts and professionals who take on the toughest tasks, such as drawing three-dimensional rectangles and squares
the downside of living in new york city is that it’s the only place in america that experiences snowstorms. the upside, and in fact the only reason i live here, is that it’s the only place where you can produce videos and upload them to youtube
