Thank you again @michaeldgreen.phd for speaking out.
I don't know what bothers me more:
Director Bhattacharya's callousness that damaging the careers of talented young scientists is "the cost of doing business" for his politics
or
His ignorance and lack of imagination about experimental design.

🚨 New Paper from UP NExT (Univ. Pitt NeuralEngineering Cross-Translation): We discovered that microglia the brain’s immune cells, aren't just a "cleanup crew". During brain stimulation, they act as hidden neural modulators, actively monitoring and contacting neurons to help manage circuit stability.
Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

hi Jeremy, were there any new R01s or R35s issued from NIGMS? Many thanks for doing this!
Every American needs to watch this:

The bureaucracy of science has grown so much, the system is collapsing upon itself:
Scientists have become administrators of grants rather than spending time on science.
Paid administrators are demanding even more administrative work from scientists.
Administrators are eating the science budget.

1. Yesterday I was fortunate enough to visit the Alfa Romeo museum in Milan. What a gorgeous museum of design.
Over the next few days I'll be posting a thread of pictures from my visit.
Here's a teaser.
Bhattacharya, a moment ago: "What you've been seeing in the press is that there have been funding cuts. There haven't been funding cuts. What there has been is a change in agency priorities."

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

Secretary Noem has forfeited her right to lead. I’m calling on her to resign.
Gregory Bovino must also be fired.
No one, not an ICE agent, not a federal officer, not a president, is above the law.
As a someone with a 33 year NIH-funded lab whose grant is supposed to be reviewed this week, shut NIH down if that is what's needed to end ICE terrorism. Innocent lives are more important 🧪
Dear Ms. Fogel: I had applied for the position of Director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) on November 21, 2025. I was subsequently informed that I had passed the first level of review (although I have no idea what that means). I am writing today to withdraw my application. As I mentioned in my materials, it would be hard for me to consider this position, even it were to be offered, given two-career issues with my family. I saw this video this morning, posted on the official NIH Director's X account (https://x.com/NIHDirector_Jay/status/2013752138493559265). This made me fully realize that I should not waste my time or yours with my application as I cannot imagine working for NIH leadership that has so little respect for facts, the NIH and its staff, and the American public (and, I might add, themselves). Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely yours, Jeremy M. Berg
I just withdrew my application for the NIGMS Director position....

1. Adjust expectations of productivity.
2. Fighting for science now = more science we can all do later. So, fight!
3. Build community—every scientist is a friend now. We are in this together.
4. Do the science you can do, w/ the time & resources you have.
5. The wonders remain! Soak them in.

thank you for helping my friends come to school
A buddy in MN shared a drawing a classmate of his kid made. They've been making thank you notes for parents who have volunteered to carpool them to school so their own parents don't have to risk waiting out by the bus stop.
I want to talk about a dystopian world we are entering - where every moment, event, and crisis just become commodities.
Life stops being something we live, but something we sell and trade. It will breed both corruption & emptiness.
