As I’ve said before, the variety of sources sets this book well apart. More colour than any comparable book on the time.

Lawrence was chosen to go to the Hejaz partly because his name was already known to the Sherif, as the designer of his new stamps.

For #IWD, we recognise the women of the U.S. Signal Corps. Called the "Hello Girls," 223 American telephone operators served in France, relaying orders to & from the front lines for the A.E.F. They had drill, wore uniforms & held ranks, but weren't recognised as military veterans until 1971.

Self portrait of Horace Pippin. He painted it in 1944. Close up of his upper torso and most of his face. Wearing a dark sport coat, yellow shirt, and gold striped tie.

Pippin started his career painting scenes inspired by his WW1 service. Also known for expressive landscapes, portraits, religious subjects, and portrayals of slavery and segregation in America.

#OTD 110 years ago, the First World War's longest battle began. Today the battlefields of Verdun are a haunting reminder of the brutality of all-out mechanised war. Read more about what you can see on a visit to #Verdun: tinyurl.com/ezkaskm5

The Battle of Verdun was this man's idea. His thoughts were to cause maximum casulties to the French who would desperately defend the city, whilst minimising the German losses. It was not to work out that way.
