Visited the only free #museum in #Vienna.

1. Inn sign, about 1700-50. #Hedgehogs were common inn signs, likely due to folk tales of them feeding grapes to their young.

2. Fanny Elbler’s mechanical wings from her role as the lead in the #ballet ‘Sylphide’, 1840.

Beyond the bonnets: Jane Austen’s working women finally get their place in the spotlight Exhibition looks at housekeepers, maids and governesses who ‘enable the lives of the heroines and heroes’

I'm really so pleased that ordinary, working women's stories are being integrated back into the historical record. Their lives are interesting too, but part of me despairs when every Georgian woman's story has to be told in connection with Jane Austen.
