I am unreasonably annoyed at the damage AI has done to the noble em-dash, a perfectly elegant symbol whose reputation has been perhaps irreparably damaged by chat bots. I may be forced to return to the semi-colon if this continues.

I assumed it was for marketing purposes in most cases. They try to find another well-known name that will get more attention for a reprint. I'm thinking specifically of the awful intro to 'Infinite Jest' by Dave Eggers that amounts to "Gee, this book sure is long, wow."
