I grew up in the countryside so no civil defense sirens -- but at night sometimes we would hear planes flying maneuvers out of Bradley Field. Years later I found out that the sky over me was a mustering spot for US strategic bombers and that Soviet warheads would have checkerboarded us with blasts.
