The cartoon - Victorian-age paupers surrounded by paintings of the upper classes.
The caption given with the cartoon - a satire about the government not wanting to pay to help the poorer classes.
A picture of the Punch Magazine volume from 1843.
A picture of our collection of Punch magazine that dates from 1841 to the 1900s
Found in our stacks - a copy of the first ever recorded instance of a satirical drawing being labelled as a "cartoon"!
John Leech's "Cartoon, No. 1. Substance and Shadow" from an 1843 issue of Punch magazine permanently gave "cartoon" a new meaning in the English language.

I only met Peter Jewell a few times, but I was charmed by his benign and generous presence, curious and interested in everything and everyone around him.
Such a loss to the world, and especially his friends and family.

Very fun to explain the signal scandal to my 13 year old who truly understands the catastrophe of adding the wrong person to the group chat and absolutely fell out when I showed her the Mike Waltz emojis.

Four documents from the Gale and Morant family papers, laid out in a fan shape, which include accounts, lists and invoices.
Today is the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery & the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
Archives - such as the Gale & Morant Family Papers & Plantation Records (EUL MS 44) - can provide powerful evidence of enslavement & the atrocities of the Slave Trade.

Letβs put those just-published domestic violence deaths into comprehensible numbers: 1000 deaths over 3 years is one person murdered almost
every
single
day
And 73% of those are women. Murdered because theyβre women #femicide

Exeter Drama finalists have presented devised work for audiences around the city. There were shows about female codebreakers, fast fashion, womenβs football, AI, the nature of art, our relationship with light, political cabaret, & toxic relationships. Quite a mix!
