Imagine the comments from Dan "There's a war on cars" McLean. Honestly worth it for that alone (but we also know that congestion pricing works!)

It's a joke...also clarified that based on many existing systems, they generally at least started out with an airport tax of sorts. Once the line is more established, they sometimes get rid of it to encourage more ridership.
but it's also what every single other major city with a transit link to the airport has done. YVR has a $5 YVR Airport AddFare & then you pay depending on the destination zone. RER in Paris and BART in SF are similar (although, I think since it's now so established, SFO to downtown is cheap)
Just gotta make friends with all the transit & urban planning nerd at the city. π
I have some sources π
I think the plan is for it to go from the downtown events center, unfortunately. I'd still take it (& hopefully there are good connections to that event center, which is what I think we need to be looking at).
I do too. I love those trains. The problem with Calgary's plan is that as someone who loves trains, it would be less convenient and more expensive for me to use it. That's not to say it's a reason not to do it, just that there are other lines that should be prioritized.
I haven't looked at the breakdown in a while, but I'm quite sure it does include the fee for uber. We just live super close to the airport so it's cheap.
It's a policy choice that every airport train I've ridden has chosen, & I've ridden many. I love trains. The problem with the Calgary airport line is that it's not convenient enough. I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying there are other lines that need to be prioritized before it.
I would ride the shit out of a Banff train.
Yeah, the airport train project in its current state just isn't convenient or cheap enough to warrant being prioritized over other train projects in Calgary. As a train lover, it wouldn't make sense for me to even take it. I'm not saying that's a reason not to do it...just that we need to prioritize
Also, as someone who would take an airport train, the current plan is actually so inconvenient for me & would cost more. It costs me under $20 to uber from the YYC to my door. The train would be about $15 & then I'd still have to get home from the new hockey arena (prob by bus cuz of GL North delay)
It does. & that's why we need GL North & South. No, most of our ridership numbers are into the central business district (so not SAIT, AUArts, U of C, or Stampede). There is a significant number of people using buses from the NE to downtown.
Hard to get new Sprawl members nowadays! So busy w/ stories that I don't have time to make proper appeals. Also I feel like I've said the same thing 1000x and am sick of hearing myself say it. I also love hopping on a train & would love to see us with more trains, trams, LRTs, etc. But we're in the minority on this. Most people won't even walk down the street to their friends house & have never experienced good public transit.
too bad that got the Sean Chu treatment.
Because it wouldn't. It has to be more convenient or cheaper, & that's not in the plans.
The airport line will not be $4. There will be an airport surcharge. (SFO to downtown $10, YVR to downtown $10-$12). An uber to downtown costs about $20, which is in line with two people taking the train. If the cost is the same, people will uber for the convenience.
We have an Insta360 & I really like it. @calgaryk.bsky.social also has one.
"Some councillors say larger tax hikes will need to be on the table to pay for it" OR (hear me out) don't repeal blanket rezoning & density will help while preserving (or at least keeping at bay) current tax rates. #yyccc
I'd love to see more trains (LRTs, Trams, etc). They're the best! Super train nerd over here. But we don't have a lot of appetite for these projects, & an empty airport train seems like it would get a lot of criticism. I'd hate to see that further stall train projects that we actually need.
Don't get we wrong, I would love to see it, but it feels more like a vanity project than a need vs GL north & south. We have the fifth highest ridership per capita in North America, and the overwhelming majority of our trips are to and from the central business district.
Would it though? We currently have a great airport bus that doesn't see ridership. We're asking to spend billions of dollars to solve a problem we don't have. Why would someone take an airport train to/from downtown when its fare per rider will be the same as an uber fare to your door?
So pretty! Projects like this really bring the community together. This is a good reminder that there are good things happening even though it feels like such a slog.
We had an Artist in Residence program come & do that one year & it was really cool!
The crossing guards at elementary schools are grade 4 & 5 volunteers.
We had a pilot lined up, but then it all blew up and I've had to pivot. Still working on it, just have to go at it from a different angle (which is so annoying because we had the permits in place and everything!).
Yes, send them my way! I know about some, but can't hurt to look into more!

In my streetview image, you can see the painted curbs that Ever Active did. They've faded and people now park there all the time. Boo.
