Do you want an instant coffee machine or an experienced barista for your translations? The customer may not always be able to tell the difference between good and bad coffee. Translators must be able to explain and sell their value. - James Phillips, WIPO

The historical and cultural context of language is also very significant in translation. Knowing the background of terms, expressions, allusions etc. and what cultural, historical and intertextual connections and connotations they carry in the source & target is a major issue

Once again pointing out that you can look up bad apples in the translation agency world at Tri-Trab's website - where you also can anonymously report a bad apple if you happen to come across one.

Much to our suprise, we see more and more translation jobs for The Walt Disney Company reduced to machine translation post-editing - and this happens all over the world.
We are shocked to find out it's Disney themselves that forces this solution. One can't but wonder if filmmakers - who put so much effort into their series and features and who spend endless hours refining editing and sound engineering - are aware of what happens with their work at the very last leg of its delivery to the non-English viewer.
It's hard to understand this policy, since it takes a scant fraction of the total production cost to deliver a hight-quality language localization, while MTPE yields a product of much worse quality. Reducing foreign language versions of a Disney production to MTPE is like coating a hight-perfomance sports car with builder-grade paint.

Dear translators, please remember not to accept a job from Localize Direct (this is their usual modus operandi).

Dear devs, please remember not to hire Localize Direct (unless you're willing to spend lots of time & energy fighting in order to credit the actual people who worked on your game).

Translation isn't expensive. In fact, it's frequently the biggest return on investment:

For the top 100 grossing movies of all time, 50% of their profits were made outside of English, and they spent less than 1% of their budget on localization.
