Abruptly switching to multiyear funding means the same annual budget gets allocated to far fewer projects, making it even harder to get grants. Congress may have shot down the drastic budget cuts proposed by the White House, but the NIH is finding other ways to award fewer grants. Fight’s not over.

For a variety of reasons, the apparent "payline" from a graph is somewhat lower than the estimated success rate.

Some institutes, primarily NIGMS, are moving away from R01s to R35 (MIRA) mechanisms.

The Unmaking of the American University For decades, research universities have relied on federal funding, with no guarantee that it will last. Now their survival may depend on compliance with the government.

The Trump Administration is waging war on universities by suspending their funds. N.I.H. grants to universities are down by more than 90 per cent in the current fiscal year; so far in 2026, the National Cancer Institute hasn’t made a single grant. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/oxA7Ey

Highlights:
- sex/drug-dependent localization of extracellular matrix components to cardiac intercalated disks: Lox, Mmp9, Collagen XI
- alleviated DCM-associated intercalated disk phenotype in lipoxin-treated male MLPko, linked to downregulation of pathological Ankrd1/PKC signaling

We found profound sex-specific effects of lipoxin action. Male MLPko mice showed alleviation of some DCM symptoms (ventricular chamber dilation, inflammation, cardiac DCM signaling, intercalated disk phenotype). Females were surprisingly unresponsive to lipoxin therapy.

Madison Clark and colleagues aimed to alleviate #dilated #cardiomyopathy (DCM) in MLPko mice by targeting DCM-linked inflammation by administration of lipoxins, special pro-resolving lipid mediators.

eLife Fallout When a prestigious journal scrapped accept-reject decisions on submitted papers, some scientists rebelled, and the editor-in-chief was fired.

This account of the eLife saga will provoke much debate. One aspect isn't accurate: eLife wasn't "designed as an experiment in removing gatekeepers". The original intent was to publish "outstanding papers" but have the gatekeepers be academic not professional editors 1/2 nikomc.com/2026/03/05/e...

Nearly half of biomedical scientists worry preprints could spread shoddy research and misinformation, according to a new survey that could help explain why the life sciences have taken up the publishing practice more slowly than some other fields. https://scim.ag/3PsbLBC

Transgender was down by 84% but represents only a small number of grants.

Delays in awards and funding calls worry NIH-funded researchers Many programs may be pushed into the next fiscal year, and some could face funding gaps

β€œSince Trump took office 13 months ago, NIH has posted only 84 NOFOs, down from 787 in the previous year. Many more are in limbo. NIH has 323 opportunities listed as β€˜forecasted.’ β€œ

Seems like an innovative and exciting research environment for early career folks!

Not spending money that is appropriated for science is a tricky subject to explain, but for people in limbo (like myself, as I mentioned yesterday), it can have cause serious career harm.

Many celebrated the NIH budget bill. It’s not supporting science when an unchecked bottleneck still remains.
