If my country's head of state was just assassinated and my country's children bombed I don't think I would be making a huge distinction between what enemy military bases were being used "offensively" or "defensively".

If British bases are being used by the Americans bombing Iran, you can't be surprised when they are retaliated against. If Iran was using French bases to send out bombers to assassinate the King, you would sound pretty silly saying that those bases would be off the table as legitimate targets.
