THE CHILDREN, Melissa Albert: This is an extraordinary book. It's a page-turner, full of mystery, but that's the least of it. The language is dusted with magic. I haven't read anything like it since Ray Bradbury.
Will be published June 2nd. My advice: Be first in line.

man, that pilot ep of Starfleet Academy was everything I could have asked for, if I'd even known to ask. Hooked already.

Poster for the 2025 film Takeout: protagonist’s head looking back at us, sort of superimposed over a late-night diner.
There’s a head-stab in this one that’s something else. Puts me in mind of other dinner-thriller/horror. Could be a list? The Similars. Last Stop in Yuma County. No Exit (but is that a rest stop?). Reeker. I seem to always like them, anyway. From Dusk til Dawn is one? A roadhouse can be a diner, sure

Hardcover book: how to survivor slasher, by Justine Purcell Winans. Is someone in a wolf mask with a knife, menacing some teenagers who are all running away scared.
Swung by The Quill and Candle Bookshop up in Longmont. Great place, excellent people. Lot of horror there. Have had my eye on this one a while. Glad to finally have it:

Discoooo
4:30am, made the decision that carving on a disco playlist for two hours was the best use of my time. Think I was right? Related: will never forget driving into Canada with a carload of people and calling back, “Hey, who wants to listen to disco?” And how it was so quiet, crossing that medicine line

The Lone Gunmen: three heroes who never gave up.
Man, 9x15 of The X-Files, “Jump the Shark.” Back when, I gave up a few eps into this Coy & Vance season. Shouldn’t have.

A high wall of Halloween masks, with the word “super” in a blue glass star in the midst of them all.
Every time I look up here—a lot— I’m floored that that “superstar” hung above James Welch’s desk for thirty years. Kind of holds me to a higher standard.

Another bonus of KEEPER- really makes me want to revisit John Langan's THE FISHERMAN. A stellar cosmic folk horror novel fave that I can't recommend enough.

Mark Z. Danielewski's novel, TOM'S CROSSING, is published today. Set in the Utah mountains, it's a chase story...and as close to the Great American Novel as you're ever going to get.

An illustration of a scene from Fargo drawn in the style of the comic strip The Far Side: Marge encountering the wood chipper situation and exclaiming, “Oh Jeez.”
I’ve been rewatching the Coen Bros filmography this month and while drawing a Barton Fink illustration, it struck me how much their films feel like Far Side cartoons: funny, strange, clever, yet frequently inscrutable. Anyway here’s a thread!

Blurb text reads: “Michael Wehunt's rabbit punch of a novel is as beautifully written as it is affecting. The October Film Haunt cleverly deconstructs horror stories while at the same time constructing one that is so unique and steeped in 21st century paranoia and dread you won't be able to read this alone at night." Attributed to Paul Tremblay, New York Times bestselling author of Horror Movie and A Head Full of Ghosts. Text above cover art for THE OCTOBER FILM HAUNT reads "The fear is real." Text below reads "September 30, 2025."
If I had seen the future and known that Paul Tremblay would write Horror Movie, I might have never started The October Film Haunt. Why bother, right? Luckily, each novel does its own thing. I admire Paul’s work deeply, and I faded to black when he read my book and shared these kind thoughts.

Not because mods don’t know how to act, it’s because Gretchen doesn’t know how to act. They were out of line. Bluesky doesn’t have to allow stupidity on here. They can take their free speech elsewhere
