One hundred unanswered questions on the dispersal ecology of fungi
Abstract. Fungi comprise millions of species that play numerous varied roles in Earthβs natural and managed ecosystems, engaging in a multitude of positive

Old, big spruce logs are important habitats for a variety of fungal species. One of the most abundant one in old growth forests is Phellinus nigrolimitatus (NO svartsonekjuke). Here are two big lads from Ringsakerfjellet:

Categorisation of dispersal pathways according to the Convention of Biological Diversity (A) based on on Hulme (2009) and CBD (2014) to illustrate the distinction between key anthropogenic pathways through which non-native species are introduced and dispersed (B) and how non-native species spread naturally (C) beyond their native ranges. Example human-mediated pathways shown include international trade and travel (i), artificial waterways (ii), angling and recreational equipment (iii), railroads and roads (iv), horticulture, landscaping, and soil trade (v), and the pet trade (vi, including intentional releases).

"After maturity, forests continue to sequester carbon but more slowly, with increasing storage in deadwood and soil"
Obviously...
But, I find this discussion on old growth harvests a little weird.
"Maturity" is defined as the point of maximum growth, when harvesters want to harvest.

What a nice visualization of how species hypotheses (based on environmental sequences) relate to phylogenetic species!
Also a nice example of a study that uses metabarcoding data from online databases to improve our ecological understanding of fungi. ππ§ͺ

The Penicillin Myth
Competing theories seek to explain inconsistencies surrounding Alexander Flemingβs famed discovery.
Every biologist knows the story of Fleming's chance discovery of penicillin. But is it true?
Here, with @asimovpress.bsky.social, I write about inconsistencies in the canonical story, and explore a few alternative theories about what really happened in that St. Mary's lab in the summer of 1928.
