Biophysical Dynamics of Mesoscale Eddies: Coincident Observations from SWOT and PACE
A document by Lilian Dove. Click on the document to view its contents.
Fresh off the preprint server! @maratimes.bsky.social and I show how data from the overlapping SWOT and PACE satellite missions present a step forward in our ability to observe linked biogeochemical-physical processes in the ocean.
We look forward to chatting about this with folks at #OSM2026! π

Physical controls on heterogeneous mesopelagic biogeochemistry
Communications Earth & Environment - A patchy distribution of biogeochemical properties in the ocean interior arises from the combined influence of biological and physical processes.
Surface ocean processes impact structure deep into the ocean interior. In our perspective paper, @maratimes.bsky.social, grad student Katarina Merk, and I discuss using physical perspectives to interpret subsurface biogeochemical distributions and why we as a community should care! π

Hey, how come @nbcolympics.bsky.social doesnβt have a glaciologist on their broadcast to talk about the different types of ices they have to use for different sports? Just seems like an obvious addition. I happen to know one who is available.

Evolving lake outlines of active subglacial lakes along lower Mercer and Whillans ice streams, West Antarctica.
New GRL paper on the dynamic nature of Antarctic active subglacial lakes that have boundaries that change shape, grow, shrink, or even migrate. We show stationary lake outlines can underestimate cumulative water volume change by up to ~100% and overestimate lakebed area.

Today, while arguing with @lpadman.bsky.social in the comments of a Google document, I learned that the Oxford Style Guide says βdo not useβ for em-dashes and the AP Stylebook says βdo not useβ for en-dashes. British vs. US English strikes again! A good day.

Truly the standard in thickness. More than having a perfect lead image, this nine-minute video is a perfect way to wind down from the Bears game and its thick pressure moments.

Our research impact reaches all the way to Antarctica! π
LSU researcher @icedoctord.bsky.social and team at @lsugeology.bsky.social have documented, in rare detail, a large brine discharge event at Blood Falls. The salty, blood-colored water flows out when pressure under Taylor Glacier rises.

Iβm just spitballing here, but what ifβ¦ we take how much this would cost and insteadβ¦ create a big pot of money that scientists could propose toβ¦ to research Greenland. Think about how many scientists we station there! Maybe even buy some LC-130s to transport them. Maybe even launch some satellites.

And just one last note: I ran almost twice as many miles in 2025 as I did in any other year in the last decade and also was more scientifically productive than any year in career so far. Funny how that works.

And today in the @nytimes.com: a fundamental misunderstanding of the marine ice sheet instability. (fun fact: the description in the paper of record is what ChatGPT often gives you when you ask what MISI is. I know this because it is exactly a question on a homework I assign in my glaciology class.)
