I'm one of many professors quoted in this report from Alice Speri. I really appreciate The Guardian taking an angle which has basically eluded every other major outlet.

My extra radical far loony left position is that no one should ever be allowed to make a profit from academic publishing. It is a public good. See also: education, healthcare (on a good day, public transport…)
Sudanese scientists have their careers trashed so Shabana Mahmood can burnish her credentials with the Daily Mail and a "government spokesperson" talks of "the UK’s steadfast commitment to bringing about an end to the conflict and supporting the people of Sudan". For shame.
I dip in to GB News and Talk because it's important to see what they are saying and getting away with.
My impression is that both are pushing the boundaries of "acceptable discourse" well beyond the limits.
Stuff like this has become normal, and it's frightening.
Little public challenge, including from
> GB News staff who aren't white nationalists/racists
> Regulator
> Govt ministers, Opposition, backbench MPs
- anxious about free speech/hate speech
- too awkward if on a TV channel, not 4Chan?
> Other media outlets: now seen as normal, not newsworthy?
Repeated appearances suggest a conscious editorial decision at GB News that talking about migration + demographic change as 'genocide' + positing that it will inevitably lead to violence against the white group is a legitimate part of the mainstream political discourse
GB News is platforming an extremist narrative that is central to the socialisation of violence, including to the terrorist rampages in Europe and New Zealand & the USA

The securitization of the 2026 World Cup is such a fascinating topic. I wish I had the resources (i.e. an external funder) to do a comparative study, comparing national responses between the three host countries as well as local/regional differences within each country (particularly U.S.).
Trump capitalizing off Messi's presence at the White House is a painful thing to witness, Messi smiling along at Trump's jokes & compliments. @mlsist.bsky.social is right: Messi et al were "the wallpaper for his political & cultural aims," standing there while he rambled on abt Iran, Cuba, Venezuela
Grok posts re Hillsborough, Munich & Jota deleted after Liverpool & MU complaints. From @dansheldon.bsky.social for @theathleticfc.bsky.social.

Staggered at how bad this article is. The only reference to the US and Israeli attack on Iran being illegal (therefore a serious international crime) is from a direct quote from @zackpolanski.bsky.social which Rifkind lampoons.
The right-wing echo chamber is fed by deeply unserious people.
Peace is for wimps.
U.S. university campuses in the Middle East are canceling classes or moving them online
Campuses include: Georgetown, Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern, Virginia Commonwealth, TAMU and Weill Cornell Medical College, all in Qatar.
And, NYU Abu Dhabi which is in the UAE.

The asymmetry of the value placed on human life is so striking. Israel has a goal to recover 40-year-old remains; to do so, it invades a sovereign country, and the lives of 26 Lebanese are an afterthought. Their names not even worth printing in the New York Times.
Sanchez is a notable exception here. Good for him/🇪🇸:
Two rogue states led by criminals are engaged in a war of aggression against Iran but also against Lebanon. And yet the tone and framing of most news coverage invites us to identify with the aggressors, even if we disagree with the particular action. It is always, tacitly, "us" against the other
Tomorrow's wrap-around front page of The National.
This is the human cost.
As the UK Government talks a big game of being ready to join the US and Israel in war, over 150 families are mourning their children.
Their little girls were mostly aged 7-12.
Israeli army just ordered all of Dahiyeh residents to evacuate. Yesterday the entire south, now all of Dahiyeh (Beirut's southern suburbs).
Still have yet to see comments on proportionality from the international community. Macron asked Israel not to launch ground invasion but seems too late
Well well well, FIFA manages to profit off of the ravages of climate change: "FIFA to allow cut-away TV commercials during 2026 World Cup ‘hydration breaks’." There will be two hydration breaks per match. By @henrybushnell.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/athletic/708...
New for @josimarfootball.bsky.social. I wish to express thanks and my admiration to Zohreh Abdollahkhani, who found the courage and the strength to write this heart-rending piece, commissioned before Iran was attacked by the US and Israel.

Very convincing call to cancel your ChatGTP subscription if you have one. There are very good reasons, it's painless as there are alternatives, and it may form part of an effective boycott!

Spanish PM Sánchez responds to Trump:
"Spain is against this disaster... Govts are here to improve people's lives... It is absolutely unacceptable that those leaders who are unable to fulfill that mission use the smoke of war to hide their failure, and in the process, fill the pockets of a few."
Israeli map showing all of southern Lebanon in red with yellow arrows pointing to north of the Litani river
The IDF just ordered the *entirety of south Lebanon* to be forcibly displaced.
They are emptying the land of its population, creating a massive crisis, and will now proceed to further annihilate large parts of Lebanon.
The very nation state of Lebanon is being destroyed.
You're very welcome to join me at The Volley, Old Street, on the evening of Monday 23 March, with MC @migueldelaney.bsky.social, for the launch of my new book, "The Mbappé Project". And admission to the event is *free*! All details in link.

"The powers involved.. should immediately stop hostilities.. the rest of us should act in a coherent way, defending the same values we defend when we talk about Ukraine Gaza, Venezuela & Greenland"
Unlike the UK Spain has refused to allow the US to use Spanish bases to bomb Iran
Fantastic work as always from Fossil Free Football. The climate crisis needs to be to the centre of the debates around sport and governance, and work like this will make that happen.
Isabel Oakeshott: anti-migration commentator, economic migrant to Dubai, possible future evacuee of the very British state she insists is broken.
Isn’t it funny how mobility becomes acceptable when it’s your own?
One of my favourite sides of politics/media.
He's trying to restrict millions of people's right to vote, based on made up statistics and outright lies, and nobody who is in a position to ask him to prove what he's saying is doing so.
