Had a fab time at the @envirant.bsky.social workshop held @teagasc.bsky.social Ashtown this week. Nice workshop on measuring anthelmintics residues followed by two days of cracking talks on all things worm control. Met some of the nicest people too!

Working from home today, and made the terrible mistake (inspired decision) of making sure all the bird feeders were fully replenished...not much work happening, but delighted by what's happening outside!
Thank you Johannes! π
Pleased that our new meta-analysis on targeted selective treatment for parasite control has been published online by Veterinary Parasitology! We analysed the impacts of TST on animal performance, infection and wormer use compared to other treatment methods: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Cool paper exploring the links between ewe nutritional status, failure of passive transfer of immunity, and lamb growth: bvajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/.... Important to develop cut-off parameters to diagnose FPTI like we have for cattle!
*PhD opportunity @uniexecec.bsky.social* How does antimicrobial resistance spread through ecosystems?
Combine fieldwork (rodent trapping π, habitat surveys π³, pheasant sampling π¦€), molecular techniques, GIS, and spatial modelling to understand AMR evolution and spread. π¬π¦ π§ͺ

Exciting PhD opportunity on the ecological impacts of anthelmintic use on soil fauna, with a crack supervisory team and expertise from @hutton.ac.uk, @uofglasgow.bsky.social and @moredunfoundation.bsky.social!

Year 3 of our experiment looking at impacts of rotational grazing on sheep-parasite interactions is DONE! Huge amounts of data collected already (lamb growth, pasture mass, FEC), with a freezer full of samples ready to be attacked over winterβ¦

Yep, Alison was telling me about the difficulties. I'm sure it's irritating because there are a lot of studies on the topic, butthey all differ so much in what they've done and what/how they report that comparing them becomes impossible...I'll look out for it tho because it would be really valuable!
Excellent! I gather there may have been a meta-analysis involved as well, that was proving quite tricky to get started with...
Our article on the peri-parturient relaxation of immunity is out in Vet Para (experiment >10 years ago, before I arrived at Moredun!). Ewes show declines in Th1 & Th2 cytokines, but increased regulatory cytokine around lamb birth, explaining an increase in FEC: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Our 2025 Sep issue bit.ly/2N9R8Es reviews species sanitation & structural resilience in malaria control, animal trypanosomosis control, parasite genome organization, Leishmania attachment in sandflies, nonchemotherapeutic nematode control, tick & host microbiotas, parasitic neural manipulation &more

Absolute pleasure to be involved in this review article on sustainable parasite control in ruminants. Full of lovely stuff on vaccines, nutrition, genetics, grazing and biological control! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Set up a couple of baited pitfall traps to see what dung beetles weβve got in our grazing trial at our research farm. Looking forward to seeing what weβve got in a weekβs time!
Lots of fun in the Moredun tent at the Royal Highland Show yesterday, chatting to folk about various project and showing them revolting things in jars. Nipped out for a bit to see some animals and get the obligatory Valais Blacknose pic
Great fun dung beetle hunting in our grazing trial plots at Moredun with Kelly Jowett and Gen Kiero-Watson from @rothamsted.bsky.social yesterday! Should be the start of a great collab
Lovely geotropid dung beetle on sheep poo on the path up Schiehallion at the weekend- with wee phoretic mite pal in tow!
Gearing up for our grazing trial with a look around the paddocks to see how the lambs are getting on- and also going into the sheds just because theyβre cute up close π
Seriously plush remote office setup at grandma and granddadβs place
Yesterday I turned 40 (FORTY! FOUR-OH!) for crying out loud. Never mind, my lovely colleagues @moredunfoundation.bsky.social were there to simultaneously soften the blow and take the mick out of meβ¦
Not usual for us to be up at the farm in January- but it looked an absolute picture in the snow, set off beautifully by everyoneβs favourite sheep dog!
Heading back to work today likeβ¦
Congrats Micky- incredible work gathering the data and some really nice results π
