Colavito’s Power is the “best” card of Page 32 in my eyes, but Hank Aguirre is easily my favorite. It’s like a high end portrait that feels like a total departure from the rest of the set.

Casting my vote for Paul Richards, which I think is the most attractive card in the set. Also the headline photo includes Billy Herman - who is a Hall of famer - which is very misleading! Nice article

I shipped my last shipment and sold my "port" at the end of the year after they completely changed their bulk shipping option. My reason for using them - pick up low to mid-range singles over time and ship once - was gone. Now raising to $0.50 per card is nuts. Used to be my #1 place to buy. Sad.

Page 31. 1962 Topps. Crew Cuts. Mossi. I will bet you a dollar that you can't guess how old Howie Koplitz is in this photo. Yes, it's under 45. It's also one of the worst Tigers airbrushings of all time. Koplitz and Alusik are the first Tigers to wear glasses since 1957. What a page.

I had never realized/considered this before! Also obscured by the fact that he does get an individual card in this set in a sense

Tell me this WBC idea - which I pitched in my column today - wouldn't be the greatest week of baseball of all time.

If you thought, like I did, that Mike Roarke's photo was identical to his 1961 one that is not the case, upon further inspection. Clearly the same photo shoot though (reuse of 1960 photos will be a theme in this set...)

The wood paneled 1962 Topps cards are upon us, but we don't get that full wood-grained flavor on Page 30 - the team card & League Leaders really break it up. For this page, we can focus on the player floating heads (1961 had coaches), and the fun Bob's Pupils Mentor/Mentee concept.

My Ted Williams card is in a slab, so I’ve got the Archives card as a placeholder, but here is my 1956 Topps binder. I still can’t believe this actually happened. Adolescent Pete would be awed.

Next project: 1975 Topps.

FWIW, yes, Kaline played a TINY bit of Left Field. 17 total games in his career, with a maximum of 5 appearances in 1957 and 1968 (tied). Whatever. Here are Kaline's awesome All Star cards from 1959-61. He lamentably didn't get one in the great 1958 design despite being an All Star from 1955 on.

Page 29 wraps up 1961 and includes another classic All Star card design. I love special All Star cards. Like, love them love them. But this will be the last really unique design for a number of years. One gripe? Al Kaline played RF - except in '59 & 60 when he played CF - but not LF!

Text from Wife at 3:15: Son (9) isn’t home from school yet. He was supposed to be here at 3

W at 3:20: I’m going to have to go look for him

W at 3:21: He’s back. He found a big box marked free and loaded his backpack with as many as he could fit…

Today's binder page reminds me: The 1961 Tigers were ridiculously good -- 101 Wins, best offense in the AL. With the '61 Yanks they get forgotten, but remember this:

Cash 361/487/662 (201 OPS+) w/ 41 HR 132 RBI
Colavito 290/402/580 (158 OPS+) w/ 45HR 140 RBI
Kaline 324/393/515 (152 OPS+) w/41 2B

Binder Page 28 features two of the three reasons that the 1961 Tigers had the best offense in the AL. Harry Chiti showing the one-and-done (1960) "Tigers" home uniform. One quirk of these cards that I like is the swapping of red and yellow boxes. Keeps it interesting, but consistent #ToppsTigers75

No, I think that's a common reaction but they so get easily overshadowed by other issues in the late 50s and into the 60s that they are never top of mind among excellent card issues, I don't think.

Sitting with a full page (Page 27) of 1961's, they feel downright austere compared to the prior few years. In that sense I think they get buried in the card-collector consciousness, but I adore them.

Note Norm Cash sporting the new Tigers road jersey for the first time on a card

Hilariously, MSU had more free throws until the last minute, when Izzo gave Michigan 10 FTs for an advantage of 9 so he could complain about it in his presser

Page 26 kicks off with a whole bunch of non-standard 61’s. I don’t know if the Tigers were just so bad prior that they didn’t have any league leaders or if these were the first LL cards, but either way they’re the first for Detroit. You can see who my dad didn’t care for. 😜

I feel the same way. If you’re an All Star for 10 seasons you’re in. Should be automatic and I’m yet to find a single player that meets that qualification that I’d be upset about gaining entry.

I was literally thinking about this yesterday! The fact that he hasn’t even been considered since his 1 and done ballot is what gets me.
