It won the Wainwright ๐ (also makes a link between Woolf writing about going mad & the author feeling... a bit grumpy)

Hmm, an award-winning work of nature writing (from 2023) speculating that Woolf might not have walked into the River Ouse had she just waited a few more weeks for spring. "Nature cure" at its most extreme.

The saddest, one-eyed, not-really-a-great-auk at Leeds Discovery Centre last week. The gold paint streaks on the beak to indicate ridges suggest a taxidermist giving up.

An extinct auk and an extant curator. Heads of a Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis) and me, Martin Stervander.
The Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis) was transported in its custom-built wooden box, insulated from too much vibrations with thigh shock absorbers, in a taxi...
The Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis) Singh the light of day again, peering out from padding on its box.
Finally back in its display case, next to a bunch of Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis) bones, leftovers from very early Scottish dinners...
So, after a temporary (15-year!) absence, we returned National Museums Scotland's mount of the #extinct Great Auk to the public exhibition (Early People/Beginnings, basement floor Scotland galleries) today! Have you had a two-bodyguard taxi ride in a custom-built case? ๐

I should really start preparing for my viva (PhD defence) next week. Or maybe the week after.
Does anybody have any tips they are willing to share, or maybe most likely questions for an ecocritical/envhum thesis? ๐๐ฆ

A table with a sign saying โTouch Tableโ and different skulls and parts of birds.
A kingfisher wing & raptor foot on a nature table
A natterjack toad skeleton on a nature table
The โTouch Tableโ at Caerlaverock WWT is so fun & well done. Not sure my toddler was ready to understand skulls and skeletons but she liked the soft kingfisherโs wing.

Having fun playing with these this afternoon - Instagram filters by artist Hanna Tuulikki that turn you into five of the UK's threatened bird species. Curlew is the best! www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-engl...
